A passion for the profession

Talking about the generation of veteran artists who are still sticking with the stage, we can mention People's Artist Ngoc Giau (80 years old) and Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu (92 years old).

The two ladies have different backgrounds when it comes to acting, but they share a passion for art and a strong love for their profession. During the days leading up to Tet, the two ladies are still working hard on the set.

This year, People's Artist Ngoc Giau made a beautiful impression with a supporting role in the movie "Mai" and many music videos, reformed opera with young actors.

Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu left a heartbreaking feeling through the MV "Sleeping by Mother's Feet" by musician Bac Son, performed by singer Lieu Ky to attend the Nikon Film Festival.

The two ladies are always on time at the set, enthusiastically setting an example for the younger generation of actors.

Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu

People's Artist Ngoc Giau went to the film set by motorbike, while Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu has remained faithful to the motorbike that has been with her all night for many years.

"Sometimes when I film in the morning, I wake up at 4am, then drive myself to the studio in Hoc Mon to film the first scenes of a movie. But I'm not tired, I still have enough energy to stand in front of the camera. Maybe because the Ancestor still loves me, I keep working diligently and still feel healthy" - Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu sincerely confided.

Her children have advised her many times to take a motorbike taxi, "imprisoning" her motorbike because she is old and has poor eyesight, making it difficult to control. But she has refused, afraid of the expense of filming far away, "when the salary is almost gone, what is left? If it still works well, I will just ride my motorbike" - she said.

Just like that, she acted out her character vividly. Then she rode her motorbike back home.

Looking at Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu, it is hard to guess how old she has been, from being a radio announcer to the Southern Opera troupe in the North, and then her career brought her to acting.

People's Artist Ngoc Giau always reminds her children and grandchildren to pursue acting. "Always work hard. Don't be afraid that artists will lose their jobs when they get old. If you perform well, producers will still invite you to participate" - she shared and boasted that on the first day of Tet, she received a "ting ting" phone call (MC Tran Thanh gave her a lucky money of 50 million VND).

People's Artist Ngoc Giau

In the upcoming program honoring People's Artist Minh Vuong "Khoi Nguyen vong co" held on the evening of March 16 at Ben Thanh Theater, she and he will perform the excerpt "Rang Ngoc Con Son". She plays the role of Nguyen Thi Lo, he plays the role of Nguyen Trai.

Nowadays, she is still in high demand for the roles of the old woman when young artists make reformed opera music videos. From television stages to reformed opera videos, audiences still cannot forget the sweet, soulful voice of People's Artist Ngoc Giau.

She also participated in the ancient play "Yin and Yang Battle" of the Huynh Long troupe in 2023, receiving praise from a large audience.

On the "running shows" of People's Artist Ngoc Giau, she is very good at introducing singers and artists to take on additional performance schedules. "Ma Giau often introduces me to sing at home-based amateur music performances of businesses. She also accompanies us. At each show, she sings a few vọng cổ songs and Southern amateur music, which is enough to pay for groceries for a month" - Meritorious Artist Le Tu said.

Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu and singer Lieu Ky

Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu said: "Since I was young, I have only known how to make a living as an actor and announcer. If I left this profession, I wouldn't know what to do. It's really fun to participate with the young generation of actors, to see that I can still meet the audience."

Singer Lieu Ky said that when performing with Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu, he both admired and trembled. Because she acted with great passion. "I call her my grandmother, I learned a lot of experience from her and summarized many valuable lessons from her. In particular, my grandmother is not afraid of difficulties or hardships, even though she is old, she still works very meticulously" - the singer who won the championship of the "Bac Son Love Song" Contest in 2017 said.

Mentoring the younger generation

The two veteran artists told stories about the show run before Tet to keep up with the progress of the MVs, which is always receiving thoughtful care from the young actors and singers. "There were cakes, drinks, sometimes even being carried to the filming location because they were afraid that my weak legs would get tired from the long journey. They loved me so much, so every time I finished filming and came back, I missed the set so much. Not only that, when filming, I got to celebrate Tet early, the houses near the filming location brought braised pork with eggs, pickled cucumbers, and pickled onions, I loved it" - People's Artist Ngoc Giau said.

She was most touched when many taxi or motorbike drivers did not accept money, gave her the fare and only asked to take a souvenir photo with her.

Most of the stories of the two female generals mention their dedicated guidance to the younger generation of artists.

Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu

On the stage of reformed opera and drama, People's Artist Ngoc Giau is always worthy of being a teacher and an artist with a sense of responsibility when accompanying the young generation of actors to bring success to the plays.

She always showed up at the rehearsal early, giving her all to her role even if it was just a supporting role.

"I have seen her many times practicing difficult songs for female actors. That is a valuable asset to improve their careers and pass on their passion to the next generation," said artist Binh Tinh.

Sharing the same spirit of passing on her profession to the younger generation, Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu said that when filming music videos or TV dramas, she often teaches actors how to act close-up.

Every look, every facial expression, every line must be genuine. She told artists that when they reach old age, they should not let their experiences become crippling. They should pass them on so that the flow of art can continue.

"I will pass on all my skills to the younger generation of actors so that art will forever be spring" - Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu said.
