After more than 30 years of working in remote areas, teacher Do Thi Hoi not only loves her students wholeheartedly but is also very creative in teaching.

On a beautiful sunny afternoon at Lac Hoa 1 Primary School (Vinh Chau town, Soc Trang province), when the school bell rang and students rushed home, in class 4A5, Ms. Do Thi Hoi was still correcting each stroke of her students' handwriting. This was tutoring time for her to tutor students who had limited comprehension.

Wholeheartedly help students

In addition to students with limited learning ability, some other students also asked Ms. Hoi to stay in class because of the appeal of her teaching hours.

Ms. Hoi was born in 1973, originally from Thai Binh. After graduating from Soc Trang Pedagogical High School in 1992, she has worked at Lac Hoa 1 Primary School until now.

"When I first came to Lac Hoa 1, I saw that the students' learning conditions were still very poor. Up to 80% of the students here are children of ethnic minorities such as Khmer, Chinese...; many of them had to drop out of school due to difficult family circumstances. I was very sad, so even though I had the opportunity to transfer to a place with better conditions, I still chose to stay with the students," Ms. Hoi confided.

Ms. Do Thi Hoi gives gifts to students from difficult family circumstances.

To communicate better, Ms. Hoi and her colleagues have studied the customs, habits and language of the local people, grasped the psychology of parents and students to have effective teaching methods and approaches. Ms. Hoi always lets the children develop according to their own abilities, not setting unrealistic goals.

Sharing about the decision to teach after-school classes for students, Ms. Hoi said that each student's ability to learn is different. Some students learn quickly, some learn slowly, this is normal. To help them progress and catch up with their friends, she spends time teaching extra lessons. In all the years of Ms. Hoi's class, 100% of the students have passed the grade, and no student has dropped out of school halfway.

"I told the parents that their children were limited in their studies and that I wanted to tutor them after school. The parents agreed immediately. When they had to stay for extra hours, some students were initially uncomfortable, but I tried to make it fun for them. Some students who were not students with limited learning ability also asked to stay and study with their friends," Ms. Hoi confided.

See her as a second mother

Although the tutoring time is only 30 - 40 minutes, Ms. Hoi knows how to take advantage of it as "golden time", helping students absorb knowledge easily.

At noon, teachers and students were tired and hungry, but because of their enthusiasm for learning, all fatigue quickly disappeared. Like a beautiful image of the school, Ms. Hoi was always the last one to return home after the end of informal classes. There were children who lived far away and had no one to pick them up and had to go to school in the afternoon, but she picked them up at her house at noon, fed them, and then took them to school in the afternoon.

Tang Hoa Thien, a student at Lac Hoa 1 Primary School, was moved: "To me, Ms. Hoi is a very good, thoughtful and gentle person. I consider her as my second mother. The whole class loves her very much and tries to study better every day to not let her down."

For students in difficult circumstances, Ms. Hoi actively coordinates with local authorities to support policies and reduce tuition fees for them. In recent years, as Chairwoman of the school's Trade Union, she has mobilized benefactors to support the Fund for Poor Students and the School's Education Promotion Fund. The Fund has supported students with 13 scholarships, 3 bicycles, more than 1,000 notebooks, 150 pairs of sandals, 1.7 tons of rice, 60 school bags, 150 sets of clothes, hundreds of water bottles, dozens of textbooks, and school supplies.

Although her salary is not high, Ms. Hoi often sets aside some money every month to buy her students pens, notebooks, or school supplies... She sees them as small spiritual gifts, encouraging them to excel in their studies.

Ms. Tran Kim Ly, a parent, was grateful: "Ms. Hoi wholeheartedly tutors and loves her students, which makes parents very happy and confident. Sometimes at home, my child doesn't listen to what his parents say, but at school, he is very obedient and listens to the teacher."

In terms of expertise, Ms. Hoi is a good teacher, with many creative ideas in teaching. She won a second prize and a consolation prize at the provincial level in the competition for excellent teachers. She also has initiatives that have been recognized and widely applied by the People's Committee of Soc Trang province, such as: Some measures to coordinate support tools to help 3rd grade students write good short paragraphs in the 2014-2015 school year; some measures to do well the work of homeroom teachers for 2nd grade at Lac Hoa 1 Primary School in the 2016-2017 school year; measures to improve the quality of history learning in class 5A4, school year 2021-2022...

Principal of Lac Hoa 1 Primary School - Mr. Thach Thanh Hoa emphasized: "Ms. Hoi is a good teacher, with solid expertise and a lot of experience, dedicated to her profession. She has devoted a lot of affection to her beloved students. In the school, she always has a sense of building, striving and is willing to help and share experiences with colleagues, so she is loved by everyone."

With her contributions, Ms. Hoi was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister in 2012, a Third-class Labor Medal in 2018; the title of Excellent Teacher in 2017, and the title of People's Teacher in 2024.

The "literacy eradication" teacher

Ms. Do Thi Hoi also cooperated with local authorities to open literacy classes for people in the evening. The students in the class are mainly ethnic minorities of all ages; some people come to study right after work...

Up to now, Ms. Hoi has mobilized to open 1 class with 13 students, the government mobilized to open 2 classes with 17 students. "Being able to teach classes to eliminate illiteracy and provide primary education to the people, I am very happy because it helps them have a better life" - Ms. Hoi expressed.
