Is being the valedictorian of a university graduation a title that brings glory and makes you easily appreciated by businesses? Do students need to worry about building their personal brand?... are the questions raised by diplomat Ton Nu Thi Ninh and the answers are quite surprising.

Ms. Ton Nu Thi Ninh, diplomat and President of the Ho Chi Minh City Peace and Development Foundation, had a talk with students of Hoa Sen University on the topic "Limitations and advantages of Vietnam and Vietnamese people in building and forming human resources to meet the requirements of the new period" on March 1. The talk became surprising when a former student who was the valedictorian of the school and Ms. Ninh discussed with her about the value of "valedictorian halo" for work and success.

Valedictorian still has to keep trying

Also participating in the discussion at the talk show was Pham Huynh Huong, a former student of Hoa Sen University, valedictorian of the 2023 Human Resource Management major, and a former student of Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted.

Ms. Ton Nu Thi Ninh (middle) shared her thoughts to help students have a multi-dimensional view of the limitations and advantages of Vietnamese workers. Valedictorian Pham Quynh Huong (second from left) also answered about the "halo" of the title of valedictorian.

Although Huong is considered to have had a certain success as the operations manager of the FnB startup project Your Vibes Coffee & Space, Huong said that she has been facing certain difficulties in the working process since graduating.

"As a young person with formal professional training, however, in the early stages of joining the young startup business environment, I also had barriers when communicating with colleagues and superiors. Sometimes, I still felt shy to share small questions with normal content with my colleagues," Huong shared.

In response to this confession, speaker Ton Nu Thi Ninh asked the question, "You graduated as valedictorian of your university, will the 'halo from the title of valedictorian' help your work?"

Pham Huynh Huong frankly admitted: "Valedictorian is just a title, I still have to try to learn and work hard to be appreciated by businesses. To overcome the initial difficulties and obstacles, I highly value discipline. Every decision related to work, I have to be very careful. Besides, I always promote the logical presentation ability I learned at university, always have a progressive spirit, not afraid of difficulties, not afraid of hardships".

Don't worry too much about personal branding.

Also facing similar difficulties, Dang Ky Anh, a third-year student majoring in English, said that from her own observations while working part-time, Ky Anh realized that young people lack confidence, are not proactive in communicating with superiors, and are afraid to express their opinions...

Ms. Ton Nu Thi Ninh explained that Asian education may be slower than the West in terms of helping learners gain confidence and a critical spirit. However, today's young generation has many confident and dynamic people.

Students at the talk

According to Ms. Ninh, Vietnamese people are considered by foreigners to be very determined and never give up. This is also her advice and encouragement for young people. Along with that, optimism and love of life will be the key to help young people overcome all difficulties and adversities in work and life.

In response to the question "How can students who are about to graduate build their personal brand?", Ms. Ton Nu Thi Ninh affirmed: "You are still very young, you should not use the concept of 'personal brand' and do not worry about whether you have a 'brand' yet."

Ms. Ninh explained that personal branding is the mark of a long process of learning, experiencing, and working hard. "It's not that without a personal brand you have no value, because you can still work and contribute. And not everyone can create a personal brand. Therefore, you don't need to take this issue too seriously," the diplomat advised.

Dr. Phan Thi Viet Nam, Vice Principal of Hoa Sen University, commented that the talk by diplomat Ton Nu Thi Ninh helped students gain multi-dimensional perspectives on issues related to the advantages and disadvantages of young people in a period of social change and transformation due to technology today, including the great impact of AI.

"Students are inspired to constantly improve themselves, understand their strengths and weaknesses, overcome their barriers and challenges to become better versions of themselves, and confidently join the business community in the new era," said Dr. Phan Thi Viet Nam.

Limitations and advantages

According to Ms. Ton Nu Thi Ninh, Vietnam and Vietnamese workers have some limitations as follows: Lack of facilities and centers of sufficient scale and efficiency to properly and promptly meet the demand for technical and technological human resources (especially related to semiconductors and AI).

Besides, the teaching and learning methods have not yet properly and effectively met the requirements of the new stage.

Vietnamese workers have not yet developed their ability to analyze and synthesize, compare and evaluate, and think critically; have not updated their knowledge and understanding according to current trends; and are limited in the application of AI.

The foreign language proficiency of the majority of the workforce does not meet market requirements; knowledge and understanding of the world is limited.

In addition, the spirit, attitude and working methods lack confidence and initiative in relations with superiors; lack of overall and systematic view; arguments and presentation of problems lack logic and coherence and rarely propose initiatives and policies.

However, we also have some advantages such as flexible foreign policy to attract FDI and promote exports; participating in many bilateral and multilateral trade agreements.

Vietnamese workers are hard-working, progressive, open-minded, disciplined and quick learners.
