The five-year agreement, which runs from 2021 to 2026, was unanimously approved by the SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) executive committee, which represents about 160,000 actors and other media professionals.

AI has emerged as a major concern in the entertainment industry. Last year, the issue was at the center of negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and major studios, leading to a months-long Hollywood actors’ strike. The strike ended in November when the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee passed a contract that included protections for actors against AI.
The music industry is also facing a headache as the emergence of generative AI technology makes it easy for internet users to create songs by imitating artists' voices without their consent.
Under the new agreement, record labels that want to use an artist's voice clone to produce and release a song will need the artist's consent and will have to compensate the artist.
“This agreement ensures that our members are protected,” said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator. “While technology can enhance the creative process, the essence of music must always be rooted in authentic human expression and experience.”
