What do we see from the Vietnamese music phenomenon that has taken the world by storm thanks to TikTok?

Previously, See Tinh by Hoang Thuy Linh, Easy to Come, Easy to Go by Quang Hung Master D or Hai Phut Hon by rapper Phao also made waves thanks to TikTok. However, despite providing an opportunity to reach an international audience, viral music on TikTok has a big problem: lack of sustainability and long-term artistic value.

A characteristic of TikTok hits is that their popularity is based on a short piece of music, usually 15 - 30 seconds. This piece of music has a catchy melody, is easy to remember, and creates a trend, but does not represent the entire song. This leads to the fact that many songs have millions of listens but few people are really interested in the full content.

This phenomenon has led to music becoming more formulaic: artists focus on creating viral-capable pieces of music rather than investing in the entire song. This has a significant impact on artistic value, as creativity is put behind commercial goals and the ability to spread on social networks.

TikTok has the power to create a hit in just a few days, but it is also this platform that causes many artists to fall into the "blooming early and fading fast" spiral. When a song goes viral on TikTok, it is easily pushed to the top of the trending list, but if the artist does not have a strong enough follow-up product, public interest will quickly fade. Many singers who had a hit song thanks to TikTok have had difficulty creating a second product with equal appeal. The reason is that this platform constantly changes trends, causing a song to be popular for a short time but then quickly replaced by a new trend.

In fact, many Vietnamese artists have emerged thanks to TikTok but do not have a long-term development strategy. They take advantage of a booming moment but fail to develop their own musical style, leading to a gradual loss of interest when the fever passes.

In addition, as TikTok music becomes a trend, many artists may be drawn into producing "instant" music to serve short-term tastes. If this continues, the music market risks losing diversity, as songs focus only on virality while ignoring creativity and content quality.

Despite its limitations, it is undeniable that TikTok is offering great opportunities for Vietnamese artists to reach the international market. The problem lies in how to utilize this platform effectively and sustainably. Instead of focusing only on viral music, artists need to create music products with more comprehensive value. They can take advantage of TikTok to share their composing stories, behind-the-scenes recordings, or organize music challenges to maintain long-term connections with audiences...

Viral music on TikTok is a remarkable phenomenon in the modern music industry, bringing unprecedented opportunities for young artists. However, if only relying on this platform without a long-term strategy, music can easily get stuck in a short-term spiral, lacking depth and true artistic value.
