On March 12, during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Mauritius, the two countries upgraded their bilateral relations to an enhanced strategic partnership with the signing of eight important agreements.

The agreements include promoting the use of national currencies in cross-border transactions, sharing maritime data, cooperating on anti-money laundering and boosting cooperation in regional development projects, according to the Times of India .

India also pledged to support Mauritius in building important infrastructure such as the new Parliament building and community development projects. In addition, both sides agreed to use local currencies in bilateral trade settlements, thereby opening up new opportunities for economic cooperation.

During talks with his host counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister Modi unveiled a new vision for the Global South, called “Inclusive Progress Together for Security and Growth Across Regions” (MAHASAGAR).

This vision focuses on trade for development, capacity building for sustainable growth and shared security for a common future.

This is a continuation of the previous “Security and Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR) policy, aiming for a free, open and secure Indian Ocean region, especially in the context of China's increasing influence in the region.

Notably, both SAGAR and MAHASAGAR were first announced by Prime Minister Modi in Mauritius, exactly 10 years apart.

The Indian leader stressed that defense and maritime security cooperation will be a key element in the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Mauritius is among the few important countries with which India established diplomatic relations in 1948, even before independence. Since 2005, India has become one of Mauritius’ largest trading partners, fostering a special and strong relationship between the two countries.

The relationship between the two countries is not only strengthened by political and economic agreements, but also by the Indian community that makes up about 70% of the population of the East African island nation, as Prime Minister Modi affirmed in a meeting with this community on March 11: "Mauritius is a family, a bridge between New Delhi and the Global South... This bond is deep and has strong roots in history, heritage and spirit of each person".
