AFP news agency reported that on March 12, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt announced that US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Moscow this weekend. Mr. Witkoff, a former real estate developer, has become the main channel of communication for negotiations with Russia.
Just before that, President Trump announced that US representatives were going to Moscow to negotiate on the conflict in Ukraine. Bloomberg news agency quoted him as saying: "Everyone is looking to Russia now, we hope to be able to reach a ceasefire."
Vice President JD Vance also stated that US representatives are actively negotiating with Russian representatives and the situation is "very good" because Ukraine has agreed to a ceasefire, only need to convince Moscow to agree.
On March 11, the US and Ukrainian delegations held hours-long negotiations in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). As a result, Kiev agreed to the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said that they would not comment on this proposal until they received detailed information from the US.
Meanwhile, defense ministers of five European countries including Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Poland met in Paris and expressed strong support for the 30-day ceasefire initiative in Ukraine, considering it an important stepping stone and an opportunity to establish the foundation for sustainable peace.
Top defense officials from five European countries pledged to take concrete steps to strengthen Europe's defense capabilities and provide security guarantees to Ukraine.
Regarding the ceasefire proposal, on the same day, March 12, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz noted that: "Some very important and core elements are that the ceasefire must be included in the peace process leading to a lasting agreement."
Besides, according to the leader, it is necessary to protect Ukraine's sovereignty and this Eastern European country needs strong armed forces as the most important security guarantee for the country, therefore, it is not allowed to demilitarize Ukraine.
