On March 12, Arab News reported that in a press conference, US President Donald Trump affirmed that Washington will not expel any Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
This latest statement contradicts the plan proposed by Mr. Trump himself for the US to take over Gaza, relocate Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan, and turn this narrow strip of land on the Mediterranean into the "Riviera of the Middle East".
Mr Trump's proposal, made in the early stages of a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, has sparked widespread global opposition, amid international concerns that the White House boss's plan would result in the permanent displacement of Palestinians from their homeland.
Regarding the negotiations on phase 2 of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, on the same day, The National News quoted informed sources as saying that the discussions taking place in Doha (Qatar) were very positive and different from previous rounds of negotiations.
"The Americans have a deeper understanding of Hamas and its situation. They also see that the cards it holds are contrary to what they have heard before through third parties," a source revealed.
US mediators have gained a deeper understanding of Hamas after unprecedented meetings between Washington representatives and the Palestinian militant group.
The latest round of talks brokered by the United States, Egypt and Qatar began in the Qatari capital Doha on the evening of March 11 with preliminary meetings. The major negotiations between all parties officially began on March 12 with the presence of U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff.
In Doha, Mr. Witkoff met with Arab foreign ministers to discuss developments in the Gaza Strip and the regional situation, especially the Gaza reconstruction plan.
According to a joint statement after the meeting, the foreign ministers presented the Gaza reconstruction plan adopted at the extraordinary Arab Summit on March 4 in Cairo, Egypt. The Arab countries agreed to continue consultations with Special Envoy Witkoff on the plan, which is considered the basis for reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
The Ministers also stressed the importance of ensuring the ceasefire in Gaza and the Palestinian territories remains in place, and urged genuine efforts to achieve a just and comprehensive peace, based on the two-state solution, to meet the aspirations of the Palestinian people for freedom and independence.
