Currently, Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve (Thanh Tan Commune, Tan Phuoc District, Tien Giang Province) has a wild animal population of about 10,000, including wild birds, fish, animals... On average, each year, about 1,000 more birds and animals are born and attracted from other places, most of which are storks, storks, herons, and ibises.


Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve (Thanh Tan Commune, Tan Phuoc District, Tien Giang Province) is known not only for its diverse ecosystem, preserving many rich species of flora and fauna, but also for its potential for tourism development.

Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve was established in 2000, with an area of ​​106.8 hectares, of which 36 hectares of cajuput are the central area, a place to attract decoy birds.

The buffer zone around the reserve is determined to have an area of ​​1,800 hectares, mainly Melaleuca forest.

Preserve a variety of animals and plants

According to the Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve Management Board, through research, survey and statistics, there are 156 plant species, 147 wild bird species, 34 fish species, 8 amphibians and 30 insects living and developing here.

The number of wild birds alone has tens of thousands of individuals, strictly protected, and is constantly growing and developing, including many rare wild animals such as: Stork, Snake-necked Stork (Dien Dien), Old Day, Black Quam, Grey Heron, Fire Heron, Ivory Stork, Dang Sen...

At Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve, the locality has invested in completing infrastructure facilities such as: internal roads, water canals, management houses, protective fences... creating a natural and completely isolated living environment for animals and plants to thrive; preventing destructive fishing and exploitation by humans that destroys rare animal and plant genetic resources, creating conditions for the restoration of Dong Thap Muoi's endemic natural resources.

Strict protection policies, favorable living environment, peace and safety are the factors attracting more and more water birds to live in Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve. The most numerous are relatives of storks.

Recently, many rare birds listed in the Vietnam Red Book, especially the Dang sen - a very large water bird, have come to live, nest and give birth in this ecological reserve.

When visiting, following the guidance of the staff of Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve, take a boat along the canals leading to the strictly protected central area to witness with your own eyes the richness of the population of wild animals and precious plants growing here: Storks, Herons, and Sen make nests on cajuput trees, banyan trees or ancient ca na, tram, and gao trees, their loud calls to call their flocks create unforgettable sounds that are hard to find anywhere else.

Underwater, schools of big and small fish: snakehead fish, perch, and climbing perch… eat and snap up bait loudly in the clumps of duckweed, water hyacinth, lotus, and water lilies blooming with purple flowers.

In the bushes are the habitat of reptiles and amphibians, including the rare cobra. In the distance, under the canopy of ancient trees, one can see huge nests of wasps, breeding peacefully.

There are many, many layers of organisms, animals and plants living together, symbiotically or dividing territories.

The most enjoyable thing is every morning and every afternoon, going up to the high hut to see the whole view of Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve spreading out in an endless green color with flocks of birds, flocks of storks flying to find food or on their way back to their nests, covering a vast blue sky.

Potential for tourism exploitation

In addition to carrying out the tasks of researching, preserving, nurturing and caring for natural flora and fauna, Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve is assessed by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Tien Giang province to have potential for tourism development.

In addition, implementing Resolution 13 dated May 5, 2017 of the Standing Committee of Tan Phuoc District Party Committee on leading the development of trade, services and tourism in the period of 2017 - 2020 and orientation to 2025, the district has focused all resources, attracted and invited investment, gradually formed, exploited, laid the foundation, and created momentum for local tourism development.

Populations of wild animals and precious plants are thriving in the Dong Thap Muoi ecological reserve (Thanh Tan commune, Tan Phuoc district, Tien Giang province).

Accordingly, the tourism orientation of Tan Phuoc district is to develop eco-tourism combined with spiritual tourism, focusing on exploiting tourism in Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve associated with Truc Lam Chanh Giac Zen Monastery.

By 2025, basically create the brand of Dong Thap Muoi Eco-tourism Area in the tourism market of Tien Giang province.

To create momentum for tourism development, in recent years, the locality has leveled the ground, built roads leading to the conservation area, internal roads, small piers, rest houses, parking lots, etc.

Tan Phuoc District has also proactively coordinated with units, travel businesses in Ho Chi Minh City and localities to organize field surveys at a number of potential tourist destinations in the district, including Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve.

Survey results show that most travel agencies and businesses highly appreciate the district's tourism potential, especially the ability to combine spiritual tourism with eco-tourism, resorts, and typical cuisine of the Dong Thap Muoi river region.

With the highlight of Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve, it will be one of the attractive destinations on the Tien Giang tourism map as well as in the linkage of tourism development in Dong Thap Muoi sub-region between Tien Giang, Long An, Dong Thap provinces and Ho Chi Minh City.
