The organic rice growing model "1 must 5 reductions" is being implemented in Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province with an area of ​​about 240h, showing outstanding efficiency.

According to the Agricultural Service Center of Go Cong Dong District, Tien Giang Province, in the Winter-Spring crop of 2024-2025, the organic rice production model has been deployed in the area with an area of ​​240 hectares. The rice variety chosen for cultivation is Dai Thom 8 rice, which has high value in the market.

Initial assessment shows that the organic rice production model "1 must 5 reductions" has lower investment costs compared to the old farming method, while increasing productivity.

Recently, the Farmers' Association at all levels of Tien Giang province in particular and the Vietnam Farmers' Association in general have propagated and pointed out the harmful effects of using chemical fertilizers in rice cultivation.

Using organic fertilizers to partially replace inorganic fertilizers will open up a promising and sustainable direction, not only helping farmers reduce costs, but also increasing the value of agricultural products and organic rice products when they are brought to the market.

This method creates safe agricultural products for consumers and protects the environment, ensuring the health of rice farmers themselves.

Mr. Pham Van Khoi, a farmer participating in the "1 must 5 reduction" rice production model in Tan Phuoc commune, Go Cong Dong district (Tien Giang province) shared: "Participating in this model, I and many other farmers were given detailed instructions by scientists on nutritional needs and sources of nutrition for rice plants.

Farmers learn how to read labels on packages, how to calculate fertilizer amounts; proper fertilization techniques; the harmful effects of overusing chemical fertilizers; measures to minimize chemical fertilizers in production...".

At the same time, we have approached the effective, advanced and friendly rice cultivation method to produce high-quality rice products, thereby replicating the model in the form of "farmers teaching farmers" so that organic rice production can be widely applied and replicated locally.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Luan, a rice farmer in Hamlet 4, Tan Phuoc Commune, Go Cong Dong District, said that the methods in organic rice production "1 must 5 reductions" show that the techniques are not too difficult to apply, the water level monitoring tools are simple, helping to save water resources, the number of times pesticides are sprayed is reduced, and using organic fertilizers instead of inorganic fertilizers reduces the cost of investing in buying inorganic fertilizers.

"When applying new farming techniques, rice has a strong root system; healthy plants, good resistance to pests and diseases; higher productivity compared to traditional methods, increasing economic efficiency for farmers after cultivation thanks to reduced input costs. I propose that functional sectors and the Commune People's Committee consider continuing to support this model in the following years," Mr. Nguyen Cong Luan proposed.

Mr. Tran Van Bac, a rice farmer in Hamlet 6, Tan Phuoc Commune, Go Cong Dong District, said: "In addition to being supported by the industry with certified organic fertilizers and rice seeds, the Commune Farmers' Association also cooperated with HK Trading Company Limited to provide input materials in the form of deferred payment, including: Organic fertilizers and biological products for the growth cycle of rice plants.

The model has proven to be effective, environmentally friendly, and safe for the health of producers. Using organic microbial fertilizers, during the cultivation process, beneficial microorganisms will enter the soil to activate, decompose stubble, decompose fertilizer residues, and poor soil layers...

Creating a brand of clean, safe and quality rice

Mr. Truong Tri Thuc, Party cell secretary and head of Hamlet 8, Tan Phuoc commune, Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province said: "When implementing the model, farmers follow the organic rice production process of "1 must, 5 reductions" to help rice plants grow and develop well, with fewer pests and diseases... the estimated rice yield of the model is higher than that of the traditional farming model".

"In addition, farmers participating in the model will receive an additional support of about 2,630,000 VND/ha, contributing to increasing farmers' income. It is proposed that in the coming time, functional sectors and the Commune Farmers' Association should pay attention to proposing support for replicating the model throughout the commune," Mr. Truong Tri Thuc proposed.

According to Mr. Phan Hoang Vu, Deputy Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Go Cong Dong district, the organic rice production model "1 must 5 reductions" is highly effective, and most importantly, the model contributes to changing farmers' awareness.

The model helps farmers gradually shift from traditional farming practices using chemical fertilizers to organic farming and towards organic farming. This has contributed to creating a brand of clean, safe, and quality rice for the locality.

Ms. Le Thi Kim Nhung, Chairwoman of Tan Phuoc Commune People's Committee (Tien Giang Province) said: "To pave the way for organic agriculture to develop, the locality has synchronously deployed organic agricultural methods in particular and mobilized resources to invest in completing infrastructure to serve production.

Along with organic agricultural production, the locality promotes propaganda to raise people's awareness of organic farming models and organic agricultural products.

From the results achieved by the model, in order to facilitate the restructuring of the commune's agricultural sector, encourage the development of high-tech agriculture and organic agriculture, the Commune People's Committee will promote the implementation of organic models, and at the same time propose that the District Agricultural Service Center consider supporting many organic models for farmers to participate and access new technology.
