Childhood memories

Thinking back to Da Nang in the 2000s when I was 5 years old, I see a peaceful, simple city. Small tree-lined streets, windy afternoons on the banks of the Han River, or the times my father rode his bike to take me to Bach Dang wharf to play.

At that time, the city was not as bustling as it is now, but the gentle, rustic nature of the people here has been deeply imprinted in my childhood memories. At that time, there were not many bridges across the Han River like there are now.

Then Da Nang changed dramatically, taking on a new look every day. Modern bridges such as Dragon Bridge, Tran Thi Ly Bridge, Thuan Phuoc Bridge connect the two banks, just like the way this city connects the past and the future. But no matter how much it develops, this city is still where I belong, where the most beautiful memories of my childhood and the dreams that grew up with time are kept.

I love Da Nang not only for what it has today, but also for the journey it has gone through – from a small city, growing into one of the most livable places in Vietnam.

Children like me must still remember a peaceful city, not as bustling as it is now. At that time, Da Nang did not have skyscrapers or bridges with bright lights every night, but in the eyes of children, it was a childhood paradise.

Streets like Nguyen Van Linh and Le Duan were not crowded with vehicles or people like they are now. The Han River Bridge was still the city’s greatest pride, and every time the bridge rotated, it was an event that children eagerly awaited.

Back then, My Khe beach was not crowded with tourists, children only needed an inflatable buoy or a few cans of soft drinks to play all afternoon.

Childhood memories are also associated with afternoons spent with my mother wandering to Han Market and Con Market, where there are countless delicious snacks such as rice paper rolls, snails, and pomegranate jelly. Small shops along the roadside are the meeting places for boys after school, while girls are fascinated by the comic book stalls along the streets.

Da Nang in those days was also a summer day filled with laughter, evenings when the power went out and we sat on the porch to enjoy the cool breeze, or times when we waited for our mother to come home from the market with a bag of fragrant cakes. Although the city has changed a lot now, the children of those days still keep in their hearts a simple, familiar and memorable Da Nang.

Born in 1997, I grew up in a Da Nang that was on the verge of transformation. At that time, the city I called home had just officially become a centrally-governed city, marking an important milestone in development and innovation.

To me, this city is not only about the roads, bridges or beaches, but also a witness to my childhood, to the innocent days running along the unpaved sidewalks, to the nights standing in the wind on Bach Dang Street, waiting until midnight to see the bridge turn.

The city grew bigger, and I also matured with each step of its transformation. The streets widened, and old houses gradually gave way to modern buildings. But somewhere, in the roadside cafes, in the late night cries of street vendors, in the small alleys nestled among the noisy streets, I still saw the old Da Nang.

No matter where I go, my heart still belongs to this place - a simple, familiar Da Nang, where every street corner, every sea breeze always whispers old stories, telling me about a childhood that is far away but never lost.

I remember those late afternoons, when the sunset still lingered on the Han River, my mother drove me on an old Dream motorbike, weaving through the small streets of Da Nang city back then.

The streets were not crowded then, high-rise buildings were rare, and the pace of life was slower than now. Every time my mother took me to the riverbank to play, what I liked most was looking at the Han River Bridge reflected on the quiet water, the yellow lights flickering on the street, and the sound of waves gently lapping against the embankment.

Growing up a little, I began to witness the changes in the city. It was 2008, the first time Da Nang organized an international fireworks competition. I still clearly remember the feeling of excitement when I went with my family to watch, among the eager crowd pouring onto both banks of the Han River. That night, the sky of Da Nang was more brilliant than ever. The fireworks burst open, their colors reflecting on the river, creating an unprecedented magical scene. Cheers echoed everywhere, and I – a child at that time – suddenly felt something very special: Da Nang was changing.

Now, every time fireworks light up the sky, I not only see beautiful performances, but also see the city's development journey, from a peaceful coastal city of the past, to a bright spot on the world tourism map.

Da Nang to me is a peaceful, simple city with small tree-lined streets, afternoons after school spent snacking with friends. I remember the times I followed my parents to Han market, the early mornings watching small boats bobbing on the Han River. At that time, Da Nang did not have many bridges across the river, nor did it have modern, spacious neighborhoods.

Growing up, I witnessed Da Nang changing day by day. The newly built bridges not only connect the two banks of the river but also symbolize the strong development of the city. The crowded streets, modern high-rise buildings, and vibrant tourist areas have completely changed the appearance of Da Nang.

This city has not only changed in appearance but also developed strongly in the way of life, in the dynamic pace of life but still has not lost the beauty of the past. Da Nang has become a place not only to remember, but also to be proud of.
