Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the country will wait until April 2 to decide whether to apply a "reciprocal" 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imported from the US.

The president said government officials are negotiating with the US Treasury and Commerce secretaries about the tax.

"We will meet with domestic steel and aluminum producers to analyze the situation. The decisions that Mexico makes will be within the framework of 'reciprocity' like Washington," the female president affirmed.

According to statistics, the US surplus with Latin America's second largest economy in steel import and export reached nearly 7 billion USD.

In 2024, the US steel and aluminum export surplus to Mexico will reach over 2.3 million tons.

* On the same day, China announced that it would take “all necessary measures” to protect its interests in response to the new 25% tariff imposed by the US on imported steel and aluminum.

Speaking at a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning stated: “We have always believed that protectionism has no way out and no side can win in trade wars and tariff wars…

The US action seriously violates the rules (of the World Trade Organization), severely damages the rules-based multilateral trading system and is not conducive to resolving the issue… Beijing will take all necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.”

* Meanwhile, the Canadian government announced additional tariffs on CAD 29.8 billion (USD 20.7 billion) worth of imported goods from the US, in response to Washington's move.

Finance Minister Dominic Leblanc announced that Canada's tariffs will take effect from March 13 (local time), targeting imported products from the US including computers and sports equipment.

* Speaking about tariffs on steel and aluminum, President Donald Trump said his tax plan would restore fairness in US trade, in the context that major trading partners have announced retaliatory measures against these two items.

During a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, the White House boss said: "We have been taken advantage of for a long time and we will not let that continue."

Also in this meeting, Mr. Trump pledged that the US would respond to the European Union (EU) imposing tariffs on $28 billion worth of US goods from April 1.
