"Indeed, in the shortest possible time we will defeat the enemy entrenched in Kursk and still conducting defensive actions there," he told senior Russian military officials.
Mr Putin heard a report from Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian military's general staff, who told him that Ukrainian troops in Kursk were now surrounded.
News agencies reported that Mr Putin stressed that Russian forces should completely liberate the area as soon as possible.
In a development related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, on March 12, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said a ceasefire in Ukraine and the resumption of US military aid to Kiev will be the main issues on the agenda of the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Canada.
The Agenzia Nova news agency quoted Foreign Minister Tajani as saying that "the ceasefire and the resumption of US military aid to Kiev will be the first issues that the G7 foreign ministers will discuss in Canada, including with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. We want Russia's conflict with Ukraine to end as soon as possible. The Europeans, united with the Americans, can achieve this."
Italy's top diplomat also hailed talks between Ukrainian and US negotiators in the Saudi city of Jeddah on March 11 as an important step towards a European-friendly peace deal in Ukraine.
