Farmers in Tan Hiep district prepare the land to sow the summer-autumn rice crop in 2025.
According to the forecast of the Kien Giang Hydrometeorological Station, the rainy season in Kien Giang province will begin from April 25 to May 5. However, before that, there were unseasonal rains over a large area, lasting for several days. From March to August, the total rainfall is generally 10-30% higher than the average of many years.
The storm season comes later than in 2024. From June to August, storm and tropical depression activity in the East Sea and direct impacts on the mainland are at a level equivalent to the average of many years.
Based on weather, meteorological and hydrological forecasts, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang province has developed a schedule for sowing the summer-autumn rice crop in 2025 as follows:
Wait 1, sow from March 15 to 31 mainly for the three-crop rice production area per year, including part of the area of Giong Rieng, Tan Hiep, Chau Thanh, Giang Thanh districts and Rach Gia city;
Phase 2, sowing from April 5 to 20, the remaining areas of Giong Rieng and Tan Hiep districts; most of the areas of Chau Thanh and Giang Thanh districts, Rach Gia city; part of Go Quao district, north of National Highway 80 of Hon Dat district.
Phase 3, sowing from May 5 to 20, most of the area of Hon Dat, Kien Luong, Giang Thanh, Go Quao districts and Rach Gia city, part of the area of Chau Thanh district,
Phase 4, sowing from May 25 to June 25 in the remaining area south of National Highway 80 of Hon Dat and Kien Luong districts, U Minh Thuong region, some sub-regions along Cai Be and Cai Lon rivers in Go Quao and Chau Thanh districts.
Farmers in Chau Thanh district harvest winter-spring rice 2024-2025.
Currently, the whole Kien Giang province has planted 280,748 hectares of winter-spring rice 2024-2025, the harvested rice area is 99,662 hectares, reaching 30.5% of the sown area.
After harvesting winter-spring rice, some localities have plowed the land and re-sown, without ensuring the isolation period between the two crops, leading to a high possibility of organic poisoning and the spread of pests such as brown planthoppers, yellow dwarf disease, and leaf curl disease to the 2025 summer-autumn crop.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang province recommends that after harvesting the winter-spring rice crop, farmers need to plow and dry the soil, clean the fields; there should be a gap of at least 20 days between the two crops to minimize the spread of brown planthoppers, yellow dwarf disease, stunted leaf curl disease and organic poisoning in the seedling stage.
Farmers are advised to use certified rice varieties with short growing time, high quality, strong plants, sowing density of 80-100 kg/ha; apply high quality, low emission rice cultivation process in the Mekong Delta.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment of districts and cities shall develop a sowing plan suitable for each sub-region to ensure concentration, synchronization, and avoidance of planthoppers; rectify the situation of spontaneous sowing outside the crop schedule; proactively take measures to respond to production losses caused by rain and storms; promote business linkages to create product outlets for farmers...
