In recent times, Phu Quoc City has attracted many projects contributing to the development of the marine economy, creating a new look for the city. Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee Tran Minh Khoa said that Phu Quoc City has undergone a spectacular transformation. From a locality lacking both accommodation and transport infrastructure, the pearl island has now developed strongly, becoming a livable city.
“Contributing to the development of Phu Quoc is the close cooperation and companionship between local authorities and enterprises in implementing investment projects to build transport infrastructure, urban areas, people's lives, environment and tourism,” said comrade Tran Minh Khoa.
PRIORITIZE MARINE TOURISM AND AQUACULTURE
According to Ms. Le Thi Hoi - Director of Thanh Hoa Farmers' Cooperative, Nam Du Commune (Kien Hai), fishermen in the commune mainly live by exploiting seafood. In recent years, seafood production has decreased, fishing grounds have been depleted, many fishermen can no longer survive, have sold their boats, and switched to raising fish in cages. The cooperative currently has 11 members, raising 23 fish rafts, releasing 110,000 fish fry each year, earning an average profit of about 700 million VND to 1 billion VND/household/year.

According to Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kien Giang province Le Huu Toan, in order to develop the fisheries sector in a sustainable manner, the province is restructuring the seafood exploitation sector, organizing and arranging the seafood exploitation fleet in a way that does not increase the number of fishing vessels. In addition, it is transforming and rearranging the structure of the coastal and offshore fishing industry in Kien Giang.
By December 2024, the province will reduce 2,233 fishing vessels, currently there are 9,531 registered fishing vessels. The province encourages businesses and people to continue to convert their occupations from fishing to aquaculture with high economic value such as shrimp and crab farming, coastal mollusk farming, pearl farming, offshore aquaculture, etc. In 2024, the province's aquaculture output will reach 814,991 tons, of which sustainable marine farming output will harvest 27,686 tons and 120,000 pearls.
According to the Provincial People's Committee, in order to fully exploit the potential and strengths of the marine economy, in 2025 the province will continue to review and complete the planning for long-term and synchronous marine economic development. At the same time, the marine economic sector will be restructured towards modernization, prioritizing the development of marine tourism, high-tech aquaculture, and processing industry. Propaganda work to raise awareness of protecting marine resources and environment, protecting marine ecosystems in association with responding to climate change will be promoted.
The province actively mobilizes resources, attracts investment in the marine economy, and at the same time promotes public-private cooperation, creating momentum for the marine economy to develop strongly, effectively and sustainably, contributing to making Kien Giang one of the key marine economic centers of the country.
