By boldly converting the structure of crops and livestock to bring high economic efficiency, many women's union members of Ngoc Bay commune, Kon Tum city have not only risen up to escape poverty sustainably but also become rich on their own land.

Ms. Y Nghe (born in 1976) in Ko Nang village, Ngoc Bay commune is one of the households that boldly changed the structure of crops, livestock, and production thinking, bringing about clear results. Ms. Y Nghe said that before, her family's economy only depended on 2 hectares of cassava and her husband's salary as a rubber worker, which was not enough to cover their living expenses, so hunger and poverty were always there. The couple struggled a lot to find a way to overcome the difficulties.

Since joining the women's association, with the attention, encouragement and support of the association's staff and members, in 2015, Ms. Nghe borrowed 50 million VND from the Social Policy Bank. With the capital and learning from the experiences of successful economic development models, she and her husband boldly invested in buying rubber seedlings to plant on the family's 2ha land and raised 2 breeding cows and 100 chickens to improve their income.

After 5 years of hard work raising, planting and caring for cows, Ms. Nghe's family's herd has increased to 10 cows, and the rubber garden has been harvested. Each year, from selling rubber latex and breeding cows, her family earns a profit of about 200-250 million VND. With reasonable spending, by 2022, the couple had built a spacious house worth nearly 1 billion VND, fully purchased household amenities and utensils, the family's life is harmonious and happy, and the children are able to go to school.

Or like the family of Ms. Y Danh (born in 1990) in Plei Klech village, in the past, although they had land, they did not know what to plant, only corn and cassava, with low economic efficiency. Participating in women's association activities, attending training classes and meetings, being encouraged by the women, sharing experiences in raising livestock and growing crops, and being approved by the Women's Union to borrow 50 million VND from the Social Policy Bank, Ms. Y Danh discussed with her family to plant 2 hectares of rubber, 1.6 hectares of fruit trees and other plants such as cassava, corn, and beans.

Up to now, Ms. Y Danh's family economy has had a stable income of 200 million VND/year from selling rubber latex, cassava and other crops. Ms. Y Danh shared: Thanks to participating in women's association activities, being guided and instructed by the sisters, I learned and knew how to raise livestock, grow crops, and convert suitable crops and livestock. Currently, my family raises 2 more breeding cows to take advantage of the corn on the field to bring home for food. Compared to before when we only grew cassava, the family economy is much better now.

Ms. Y Nhon - President of the Women's Union of Ngoc Bay commune assessed: In addition to the families of Ms. Y Danh and Ms. Y Nghe, in the commune there are many families of women members who have boldly applied effective farming and production models. Economic life has improved, many women have actively participated in movements and campaigns launched by the Women's Union and the locality.

“In the coming time, the Commune Women's Union will continue to promote propaganda, mobilize and replicate new models, good and creative practices among female cadres and members, especially changing the mindset and practices in economic development of ethnic minority women's households. At the same time, many solutions will be implemented to support women in need to access preferential capital from the Social Policy Bank and support livestock and crop varieties to further motivate disadvantaged ethnic minority women to escape poverty,” Ms. Y Nhon added.
