What to do to awaken the 'dormant' development potential in the Central Highlands?

On the afternoon of August 24, in Gia Nghia City (Dak Nong), the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City and 5 Central Highlands provinces, including Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Kon Tum jointly held a conference to discuss and agree on a plan to implement the socio-economic development cooperation agreement between Ho Chi Minh City and the Central Highlands provinces in 2023, period 2024 - 2025.

Many potentials are "dormant"

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Ho Van Muoi, Chairman of Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee, affirmed that this is a major event that the province has the honor of hosting. He also shared that because the locality does not have an airport, other provinces have to travel a long distance to attend.

According to Mr. Muoi, the Central Highlands in general and Dak Nong in particular have a lot of 'dormant' potential. The most typical are the year-round cool climate, fertile land, and forest area that accounts for a large part of the country.

About 500m from the conference hall (where the conference was held - PV) there are lush coffee gardens; the forest is only about 1km away. "The system of ponds, lakes, rivers and streams is diverse. When you come to Dak Nong, do you find the scenery here still pristine, cool and pleasant?", Mr. Muoi asked.

Talking about minerals, Mr. Muoi said that the local bauxite reserves are very large, accounting for about 60% of the country's reserves. "The potential for bauxite is very large but it is also an obstacle for the locality (accounting for about 1/3 of the province's area). Because currently, almost everything the province implements 'hits' the bauxite planning area. Everything is stuck," Mr. Muoi stated the current situation.

Mr. Ho Van Muoi, Chairman of Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee spoke at the conference.

Mr. Pham S, Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee, said that in addition to the potential for tourism development, the Central Highlands provinces also have a diverse and unique culture. "The Central Highlands provinces occupy about 2/3 of the red basalt land area in the country. The forest area and biodiversity are both very large," Mr. S cited the potential and shared that in the near future, Lam Dong will build Da Lat into a World Heritage city.

At the conference, many opinions said that the Central Highlands provinces have a lot of development potential but are "dormant", so there needs to be connection, assistance and cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City, the economic and social leader of the country, and the Central Highlands provinces, to contribute to awakening that potential.

"HCMC does not let the provinces swim alone"

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Vo Van Hoan, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, said that the city will always accompany the Central Highlands provinces to awaken the "sleeping" potentials.

The Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee said that each year, provinces need to organize a unique cultural festival in their locality. If Lam Dong organizes the Da Lat Flower Festival, Kon Tum will soon organize the Ngoc Linh ginseng festival. Dak Lak has a coffee festival, Gia Lai will soon organize a gong festival, and Dak Nong is also planning to organize a local cultural festival. Regarding this issue, Ms. Ton Thi Ngoc Hanh, Vice Chairman of the Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee, said that the province will soon organize a brocade cultural festival.

Mr. Vo Van Hoan, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, emphasized that the Central Highlands provinces need to boldly awaken the "sleeping" potentials.

Mr. Vo Van Hoan also emphasized that the provinces must boldly implement, because Ho Chi Minh City will support and lead, not leaving the localities alone. "The potential is waiting to be awakened. Don't be afraid! We will not stand aside and let the provinces swim on their own. Cultural festivals must be "higher class". In addition to serving the local people, the festivals must enhance their prestige and popularity," Mr. Hoan affirmed.

Talking about the tourism development potential of Dak Nong in particular and the Central Highlands in general, the Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee suggested that every year, Dak Nong should build a "tourism booth" of the Central Highlands provinces in Dak Nong.

"At that time, we will organize tours for tourists. Even investors will come and have real experiences at Dak Nong Global Geopark, or Ta Dung Lake, for example," Mr. Hoan suggested.

In 2023, Ho Chi Minh City will coordinate with the Central Highlands provinces to organize many regional events, connecting Ho Chi Minh City businesses with production and business investment needs in the locality; programs to connect supply and demand of goods, promote investment and trade, and share experiences in building models for seed development, biotechnology, urban agriculture, and high-tech agriculture.

In 2024 - 2025, Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and the Central Highlands provinces will cooperate in development in 5 areas, including: tourism development; connecting supply - demand, investment - trade promotion; science and technology development, digital transformation, human resource training; health and education development; agriculture.
