In 2025, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's (HUST) thinking assessment exam opened the door for separate exams organized by higher education institutions. About 14,000 candidates attended the first round of the exam on January 18 and 19.
The exam was held at the same time at 31 testing locations, including 18 testing locations in Hanoi and 13 testing locations in localities such as Thai Nguyen, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, and Da Nang.
Increase scale, maintain structure
Because Hanoi University of Science and Technology plans to increase the quota for the thinking assessment exam by 10%, this exam attracts a lot of candidates. Meanwhile, in 2024, the school organized 6 exam sessions, this year it has reduced to 3 sessions but the number of exam sessions has increased, with a maximum of 4 sessions in 1 exam session. It is noted that in the first session, the number of candidates participating increased sharply compared to last year. Candidate Tran Duc Manh (Khoai Chau High School, Hung Yen province) and his father returned to Hanoi to attend the exam session on the morning of January 19. He said that he had carefully researched this exam since last year with a long review period, so he was quite confident. He hopes to use this result to apply for admission to the Automation major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. "I also plan to use the high school graduation exam scores for admission, but this option will be more difficult because the level of competition is higher while the quota for this option has decreased. If the benchmark score is the same as last year, with my academic ability, it is not too certain, while this year's exam has some adjustments so it is difficult to predict" - Manh said.
After the first round, the second round of the thinking assessment exam will be held on March 8-9 with registration opening from February 1-6. The third round will be held on April 26-27; registration opening from April 1-6.
The structure of the thinking assessment exam of Hanoi University of Science and Technology is basically stable compared to 2024 because the school has changed the content and format of the exam according to the new General Education Program from 2023. According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien - Deputy Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the work of creating the thinking assessment exam this year is more complicated and difficult than last year because it is necessary to compare all questions to match the content of the General Education Program 2018. This helps candidates not to be confused, and there is no exam content beyond the program. The exam also applies many modern testing technologies such as standardized thinking test question construction technology, bridge theory in the exam, multi-parameter IRT model scoring technology, automatic check-in technology according to citizen identification cards integrated with the personal data management system on the National Population Database to identify candidates taking the exam to thoroughly prevent proxy exams and cheating in exams... Candidates participating in the Thinking Assessment Exam are expected to know their exam results after 7-10 days.

In 2025, not only will the high school graduation exam be organized with many new points, but the separate exams organized by universities for admission will also have many changes to suit the 2018 general education program. Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh - Director of the Center for Testing and Quality Assessment of Ho Chi Minh City National University said that this year's exam, the problem-solving part has changed significantly. If in previous years, the questions focused on subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography..., this year will shift to exploiting more diverse issues, including science, society, economics and law. This change is to ensure that all candidates, regardless of the subject chosen in high school, can access the exam fairly.
Similarly, the 2025 competency assessment test of Hanoi National University is built with a structure of 3 parts: Part 1 is Mathematics and data processing; Part 2 is Language - Literature and Part 3 is Science. In terms of format, the 2025 competency assessment test is mainly adjusted in part 3 and the way questions are asked. After completing the first two parts, in the third part, candidates will be able to choose 3 out of 5 topics in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography to complete the test within 195 minutes. The selection part related to Foreign Language will be built into a separate component to replace the Science part to assess specialized competencies.
Another notable change is that the capacity assessment and thinking assessment exams will be larger in scale than in previous years. For example, in 2025, the thinking assessment exam of Hanoi University of Science and Technology is expected to welcome 75,000 candidates, an increase of 25,000 compared to 2024, and will expand one more testing location in Lao Cai for the convenience of candidates. Ho Chi Minh City University of Education plans to organize 3-5 testing sessions at many testing locations with over 30,000 candidates...
Each separate exam is currently not only for admission to that university but also expanded, and the exam results are used for many other universities. However, the exam structure as well as the organization of each exam are different, so candidates who want to register for any exam need to research and prepare carefully to achieve the best results. To ensure fairness and conformity with the 2018 General Education Program, the Ministry of Education and Training said it will strengthen the inspection and supervision of the quality of separate exams, especially the process of building a question bank to ensure that the exam does not exceed the 2018 General Education Program.
