Mr. Tran Minh Khoa - Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee, Kien Giang province said that the locality has just submitted a report to the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee on the current situation and proposed a plan to merge the city's commune-level administrative units.
Phu Quoc currently has 7 communes and 2 wards. Phu Quoc City People's Committee proposed merging wards and communes according to two options.
Option 1, Phu Quoc City People's Committee proposed to rearrange commune-level administrative units from 9 existing communes/wards into 2 grassroots administrative units.
Specifically, reorganizing 8 communes on the main island of Phu Quoc into 1 grassroots administrative unit, with a total area of over 575 km2 and a population of over 159,800 people, with a new name of Phu Quoc Special Zone.
The temporary headquarters is expected to be located at No. 04, 30/4 Street, Duong Dong Ward (existing). In the long term, the new administrative center will be located at the eastern end of the old airport (behind the statue of Uncle Ho at Ho Chi Minh Square).
Maintain the island commune of Tho Chau, with an area of nearly 14 km2 and a population of more than 1,800 people, and take the new name Tho Chau Special Zone.
Option 2, Phu Quoc City People's Committee proposed, on the main island, 8 communes/wards will be organized into 2 grassroots administrative units and Tho Chau island commune will be kept intact.
Specifically, the North Phu Quoc Island area (including the communes of Ganh Dau, Cua Can, Bai Thom, Cua Duong, Duong Dong, part of Duong To and Ham Ninh communes), with a total area of over 450 km2 and a population of over 81,600 people, has a new name: North Phu Quoc Special Zone.
The temporary headquarters is expected to be located at the (old) headquarters at No. 4, 30/4 Street, Duong Dong Ward (existing). In the long term, the new administrative center will be implemented at the eastern end of the old airport.
The southern area of Phu Quoc Island (including An Thoi ward, part of Duong To and Ham Ninh communes), with a total area of 125 km2 and a population of more than 69,500 people, has a new name: Southern Phu Quoc Special Zone.
