IMC exam questions are proposed by countries and selected by a panel of experts including experienced international judges and 3 judges from the host country. In addition, 10 - 20% of the problems are created by the exam board.

At Key Stage 2, Year 6 and below, the test consists of 15 written tasks and takes 90 minutes. At Key Stage 3, Year 8 and below, the test consists of 12 written tasks and 3 essay tasks and takes 120 minutes. The team test is a competition between small teams of 4 students each. Candidates work together to solve 10 problems in 70 minutes.
