The Ministry of Education and Training plans that by 2035, all high school students will be taught English as a second language (from grades 1 to 12).
The above information was given at a workshop to provide comments on the draft of the National Project "Gradually introducing English as a second language in schools" for the period 2025-2035, with a vision to 2045, organized by the Ministry of Education and Training on March 5.
According to the draft project, English as a second language in Vietnamese schools means that English is taught and learned in schools where the official language is Vietnamese, but the main language used is English. In which, English is a subject and is used to teach and learn other appropriate subjects and majors, as well as used in the process of working and communicating daily at school.
The draft project stipulates 6 levels for schools to implement English as a second language in Vietnam.
The goal is that by 2035, all preschools will be qualified and implement English as a second language, and 100% of preschool children aged 3 to 5 will have access to this program. By 2045, implement the English as a second language program for all preschool children (including nursery and kindergarten groups).
For general education, by 2035, strive for all general education students to learn English as a second language (from grades 1 to 12) and implement it at levels 1, 2, 3; by 2045 at levels 4, 5, 6.
At the university level, 100% of universities offer English as a second language at levels 4, 5, and 6.
For vocational education, the goal is for 100% of schools to have English as a second language and career-oriented English programs, and for 50% of institutions to implement part of other subjects or some other subjects in English.
The draft project also clearly states the tasks and solutions for implementation such as researching and perfecting institutions; strengthening communication, raising public awareness; developing and training, retraining, and fostering teachers and lecturers; promulgating and implementing programs, curricula, textbooks, documents, and learning materials; innovating exams, tests, and assessments; promoting the application of technology platforms, artificial intelligence, strengthening facilities; promoting international cooperation, socialization, etc.
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong said that in order for the project to be implemented effectively, successfully and sustainably, the human factor is the most important, so it is necessary to focus on training a qualified team.
