Veteran plays well
After finishing the first two matches of the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup, the Vietnamese team will have a month of inactivity before regrouping at the end of December to prepare for the 2023 Asian Cup. This is the time when coach Philippe Troussier's players will return to their clubs to compete. And the V-League will continue to be the "gem furnace" for Vietnamese players to hone and improve.
The good news for coach Troussier is that in the past rounds, many national players have played regularly and made positive contributions to their home teams.
Tien Linh shines in the role of captain
First is the group of experienced players. Tien Linh has "opened his account" in scoring goals in the V-League with a goal against Khanh Hoa Club. Playing in a deep-lying role, instead of playing as a center forward as usual, Tien Linh was assigned by coach Le Huynh Duc the responsibility of connecting the attack.
In his new role, Tien Linh did not play very well, but his goal-scoring instinct still helped the striker born in 1997 shine at the right time. He eliminated 2 Khanh Hoa defenders to jump high and head the ball past goalkeeper Tuan Manh, helping Binh Duong team open the score in the context of Khanh Hoa somewhat dominating.
Tien Linh then ended the match with a "10" score when he assisted Vi Hao to score with a good through ball.
Despite his poor form, Tien Linh is still a rare domestic striker in Vietnam who is good at aerial combat and has a good sense of position in the penalty area. Being challenged by coach Huynh Duc in many roles is also an opportunity for Tien Linh to improve his vision, football skills and return to the Vietnam national team with a more impressive performance.
Hoang Duc, the player who was dropped from the plan by Mr. Troussier in the first two matches of the World Cup qualifiers, also played well in round 5. He was the author of the pass for Van Khang to score.
Hoang Duc (left) plays well
It was a pass that penetrated the defense, putting his teammates in a one-on-one situation, which was Hoang Duc's trademark. Along with his smooth ball handling and good midfield control, Hoang Duc showed that he is still determined to return to the starting lineup at the 2023 Asian Cup.
Some key players such as Tuan Hai (scored against SLNA), Viet Anh (scored against Nam Dinh FC) also had a round to put their names on the scoreboard. Van Thanh of Hanoi Police FC also played a good role, although he was assigned to play... left forward, a rather unfamiliar position, showing the versatility of this star.
'Young star' kicks evenly
The French coach's young players also played regularly. In the 5th round, Thai Son, Tuan Tai, Van Khang, Dinh Bac and Minh Trong all had starting positions.
Thai Son played his 5th match for Thanh Hoa FC since the beginning of the tournament and continued to make remarkable progress. The 20-year-old player played consistently in the midfield, playing the role of blocking, sweeping and deploying the ball. Thanks to Thai Son's abundant energy, Thanh Hoa team played proactively, aggressively and successfully broke the midfield of strong opponent Binh Dinh, thereby winning 3-2 overall.
Along with Nam Dinh FC, Thanh Hoa FC is one of the two remaining V-League teams that have not lost this season (3 wins, 2 draws). Thanh Hoa FC's good form, the coaching talent of Mr. Velizar Popov, or more importantly, the tireless efforts of Thai Son are stepping stones for the young talents of the Vietnamese team to continue to rise.
Van Khang scored his first goal in V-League
Also having 5 appearances since the beginning of the season is Tuan Tai of The Cong Viettel Club. The 22-year-old defender played a good role in his team's 2-1 win over HAGL despite only coming on as a substitute.
The most memorable thing in this match was Van Khang's first goal in the V-League. The player born in 2003 cleverly escaped after a pass from Hoang Duc, then defeated the HAGL goalkeeper with a very decisive diagonal shot.
Unlike last season with only 8 matches in V-League, this season Van Khang has played 4 matches (accounting for 80% of the total number of matches of The Cong Viettel Club) and scored 1 goal.
Although not scoring, both Minh Trong and Dinh Bac have left their mark. Minh Trong has played 4 matches for Binh Duong Club since the beginning of the tournament, mostly playing well. This is a great encouragement for the new player "breathing" the V-League atmosphere for the first time.
In the match against Khanh Hoa Club, Minh Trong also had an impressive save on the goal line, saving Binh Duong Club from falling behind (the team later won 2-0).
Dinh Bac scored 1 goal in the previous round of V-League, and continued to play aggressively in Quang Nam Club's 1-0 victory over Ha Tinh Club last weekend.
At the age of 19, Dinh Bac continues to show great potential when playing enthusiastically and energetically. The player born in 2004 has skillful and agile feet and bold handling options. This is the basis for Mr. Troussier to continue to trust Dinh Bac in the upcoming matches.
