The Pentagon is deploying about 3,000 additional troops to the southwest US border after President Donald Trump directed an increased role for the military in stemming the tide of illegal immigration.
The additional troops will come from the 4th Army Division based at Camp Carson, Colorado, one of the most combat-experienced units in the U.S. military. Two officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the deployment would be completed in the next few days and would bring the total number of troops guarding the border to 9,000, The New York Times reported yesterday.

The move marks the second major deployment of troops since Mr. Trump returned to the White House. Shortly after his inauguration on January 20, about 1,600 Marines and Army soldiers arrived at the border, joining 2,500 reservists already there.
