Experts at the UK's National Health Service (NHS) note: If you notice any sudden changes around your neck - it could be a sign of a serious problem with your kidneys.

Kidney cancer affects cells in any vital organ and has the potential to spread to other areas of the body if left untreated, according to the UK's National Health Service NHS website.

This is the 7th most common cancer and is more common in older adults and affects more men than women.

The kidney is one of the important organs.

Early detection can increase a person's chances of survival. Knowing what to look for is important to increase the chances of early detection.

And one place to look out for is the neck. A swollen neck is a rare symptom of kidney cancer - so it's best not to ignore any sudden changes.

Why is kidney cancer linked to the neck?

Although the two organs are not related, this connection is easy to explain. Experts at the University of California at Los Angeles (USA) explain that neck swelling in people with kidney cancer occurs when cancer cells can spread to the lymph nodes in the neck, causing them to swell - this is a rare form of kidney cancer.

Other symptoms of kidney cancer

Kidney cancer often has no obvious symptoms, according to the NHS. And this dangerous disease is often diagnosed when testing for another condition.

When present, symptoms may include:

  • There is blood in the urine.
  • Lump or swelling in the back, below the ribs.
  • Pain between ribs and waist that does not go away.
  • Unexplained loss of appetite or weight loss.
  • Feeling tired or having no energy.
  • High fever that does not go away.
  • Sweating a lot, even at night.

When should I seek emergency medical attention?

Seek medical attention immediately if:

  • Urine that smells, is cloudy, or has blood in it
  • Painful urination or a sudden or more frequent need to urinate.
  • Back pain, under ribs, not going away.
  • Pain in the genitals.
  • Have a lump or swelling in your back, under your ribs, or in your neck.

It is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible because the symptoms can be similar to a kidney infection, which can be serious if not treated promptly.
