More than 300 students have to study at other schools

Van Thai Primary School, Ung Hoa, Hanoi is divided into two campuses. The main campus is located on high ground while the secondary campus is located on the alluvial side of the Day River, about 400-500m from the riverbank, in Thai Binh village, Van Thai commune.

Van Thai Commune is located in the west of Ung Hoa District, 3 km from the district center. The commune lies along the Day River and National Highway 21B, with low terrain, so some villages are at risk of flooding. Thai Binh is one such village.

Some elderly people firmly assert that even if it is prone to flooding, in the past 10 years, Thai Binh village could not have been flooded this deeply. In just over a day, the water rose about 1.2 meters.

According to the experience of some locals, it is estimated that it will take more than 10 days for the flood water in front of this school to recede.

Mr. Nguyen Phuc Thinh, Vice Principal of Van Thai Primary School, said that on September 10, the locality announced a high risk of flooding.

"On September 11, after the morning school session, the school mobilized all staff to move all desks, chairs, blackboards, and teaching aids of the entire school to the main location of Van Thai Primary School and the kindergarten about 2km away.

After more than 5 hours, we moved all teaching equipment of 12 classes to the main school and kindergarten for temporary learning," said Mr. Thinh.

It is known that Van Thai Primary School has more than 800 students, including more than 300 odd students, with 12 classes. During this flood, 6 classes of Van Thai Primary School had to study at the main school, the remaining 6 classes studied at the kindergarten.

According to Mr. Thinh, the school decided to move the tables, chairs, and blackboard because the area had few students and was flooded.

"In the past 10 years, this is the first time the school has had to let students go to school to avoid the flood. The temporary relocation is a bit difficult for teachers, but in return, the students will be stable for at least about 10 days while the water has not receded," said Mr. Thinh.

Responding to Dan Tri reporter, Mr. Nguyen Duc Thang, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Ung Hoa district, said that during this flood, 100% of units in the area strictly implemented the duty of being on duty and protecting.

"Today, 4 out of 90 schools in the district are closed, and 1 school is teaching online. The schools where the floodwaters have receded are urgently cleaning up and checking the necessary conditions to organize the return of students to school on September 13," said Mr. Thang.

Also on September 12, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong and the Board of Directors visited and encouraged teachers and students in Hoan Kiem district affected by heavy rain after storm No. 3. The "flood-crossing" delegation visited some families of students at Chuong Duong Primary School, which are currently deeply submerged in water.

Although flood water is slowly receding from people's houses, traffic on many streets and alleys of Chuong Duong ward is still knee-deep, combined with power outages making people's lives inconvenient.

According to a report from the Department of Education and Training of Hoan Kiem District, as of September 12, 5 out of 38 schools in the district have temporarily stopped receiving students for in-person learning, including 2 kindergartens, 2 primary schools and 1 secondary school.

Of these, 2 kindergartens have kept children home completely, while the remaining schools are organizing online learning. The principal of Chuong Duong Primary School said that the entire school has about 110 students who have to stay home because their families live in flooded areas. Many teachers' homes are also in flooded areas.

Therefore, the school reported to the Department of Education and Training of Hoan Kiem district to allow students to take a day off from school from the afternoon of September 11 and switch from in-person to online teaching from September 12 until the weather is stable and the school is safe.

In particular, Chuong Duong Primary School also uses its facilities and classrooms from the 2nd to 4th floors as a place to avoid floods for some residents and teachers' families of the school.

Teacher Nguyen Le Thuy Quang, a teacher at the school, shared that because her house was in a flooded area, she and her family had to evacuate to the school to live and teach. The school's board of directors, staff, teachers and employees created the most favorable conditions to help her, which made her feel very secure and touched.

Currently, Hanoi has 236 schools temporarily stopping receiving students to study in person due to the impact of heavy rain.

Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong said that the entire sector identifies ensuring student safety as the top priority.

Based on the actual situation, schools are flexibly applying teaching methods to ensure student safety and maintain learning. Schools are also urgently reviewing and focusing on overcoming the consequences of natural disasters to welcome students back to school soon.

On this occasion, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training and the Hanoi Education Trade Union presented support to Chuong Duong Primary School and gifts to students of several schools in My Duc and Ung Hoa districts. These are areas heavily affected by flooding.

On the afternoon of September 12, Ms. Phung Thi Hong Ha, member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Permanent Vice Chairwoman of the Hanoi People's Council, and a working delegation visited and presented gifts to students at several schools affected by storm No. 3 in My Duc and Ung Hoa districts. According to a quick report from My Duc district, the entire district had 6 schools that allowed students to stay home due to flooding. The total number of students absent from school was nearly 2,900.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu Hoa, Principal of Hop Thanh B Primary School (My Duc District) said that the school has 683 students, of which more than 100 students have flooded houses and difficult family conditions. The school has prepared a plan to support students if the flood waters do not recede in the next few days or their families are still flooded.
