Smaller producers may cut back if oil prices fall below $60 a barrel, Fred Forthuber, president of OXY Energy Services, said, according to Reuters.
US crude oil futures are currently trading at around $67.40 a barrel.
U.S. government data released Wednesday showed U.S. crude oil inventories rose by 1.4 million barrels in the latest week, less than the expected increase of 2 million barrels. U.S. gasoline inventories fell by 5.7 million barrels, compared with expectations for a 1.9 million-barrel drop, while gasoline inventories also fell more than expected.
“This week, oil inventories were lower than expected and gasoline and diesel consumption was higher than expected. This indicates stronger demand and could lead to higher oil prices as a result,” said Josh Young, chief investment officer at Bison Interests.
Crude oil futures have been supported in recent days by a weaker US dollar and the Energy Information Administration (EIA) no longer making its previous forecast of a heavily oversupplied oil market this year, said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo.
The dollar struggled to escape a five-month low against other major currencies, as traders digested tit-for-tat tariffs between the US and the EU and the possibility of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
The dollar index (.DXY) fell 0.5% to a fresh 2025 low on Tuesday, boosting oil prices by making crude cheaper for buyers holding other currencies.
Signs of cooling inflation, however, gave investors some comfort after U.S. consumer prices rose less than expected in February. But the improvement may be temporary as higher import tariffs are expected to raise the cost of most goods in the coming months.
US President Donald Trump's economic policies so far have focused on a series of tariff announcements, some of which have already taken effect and others that have been delayed or will come into effect later.
Markets fear that tariffs could raise prices for businesses, fuel inflation and undermine consumer confidence, hurting economic growth.
"Recession fears in the United States, weakness in the U.S. stock market and concerns about tariffs affecting major oil companies like China have added to the market uncertainty and these factors could continue to fuel bearish sentiment, keeping oil prices in check," said Hassan Fawaz, chairman and founder of brokerage GivTrade.
At the same time, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries maintained its forecast for relatively strong growth in global oil demand through 2025, saying air and road transport would support consumption.
“Trade concerns are expected to contribute to volatility as trade policies continue to be announced. However, the global economy is expected to adjust,” OPEC said in the report.
OPEC also released data showing OPEC+ output rose by 363,000 barrels per day in February, led by increases in Kazakhstan, which is lagging in complying with OPEC+ output quotas.
Domestic retail gasoline prices on March 13, 2025 will be applied according to the adjustment session from 3:00 p.m. on March 6 by the Ministry of Finance - Ministry of Industry and Trade.
