Faced with the decision to increase sales fees on e-commerce platforms, many shop owners expressed concern about the risk of losing a large number of customers.
Online sellers are worried
In recent days, information about e-commerce platforms increasing fees for sellers has received special attention from the public. Many business owners on the platforms have also expressed concerns about the consequences when e-commerce platforms increase fees.
Talking to a reporter from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Ms. Hoang Thi Mai, residing in Hoang Mai District, Hanoi, who specializes in selling phone accessories on the Shopee platform, said that when the platform increases fees, shop owners are very likely to suffer losses. The reason is that competition in the online market has increased since the Covid-19 pandemic. Shop owners who want to gain an advantage and sell more products, in addition to keeping reasonable prices for their products, also need to organize discounts and promotions. However, if costs increase on the platform, shop owners not only do not dare to continue organizing discounts and promotions, but are even forced to increase product prices to avoid losses.
“When the floor increases fees, the sellers are also forced to increase product prices. This leads to the consequence that many customers will leave, the sellers will lose a significant number of customers. In business, losing customers will greatly affect revenue,” said Ms. Mai.

As a person who specializes in importing household appliances and selling them on Tiktok, Ms. Ha Huyen Linh, residing in Viet Tri City, Phu Tho Province, said: The pressure of price competition will increase when the platforms increase fees for sellers. This will be an opportunity for lower quality but cheaper products to infiltrate e-commerce platforms, affecting consumers.
“When consumers still have the habit of preferring cheap prices, price is an important key for brands to compete with each other. However, if costs increase on the floor, two trends will occur. One is that brands will focus on restructuring production, balancing costs to at least maintain product prices while still ensuring quality products on the floor. However, there may also be cases where brands, in pursuit of profits, produce or provide poor quality products at cheaper prices to consumers. At that time, buyers will be the ones to suffer the consequences,” Ms. Ha Huyen Linh worried.
Exchanges have reasons to increase fees
Regarding this issue, speaking with a reporter from Cong Thuong Newspaper, Mr. Tran Van Trong - General Secretary of the Vietnam E-commerce Association - affirmed: "The floors will increase fees for sellers. This fee increase certainly has a reason. However, the floors will also have calculations and balances to retain their customers. Regarding the reasons and impacts of this, we are also synthesizing information from all parties and will have specific feedback to the press" .

Previously, Shopee and TikTok Shop announced that they would adjust their fee policies from April 1, 2025. Specifically, Shopee will increase the fixed fee from 0.5% - 6% depending on the product category. At the same time, the platform will stop providing the Freeship Xtra package and launch a floor-wide shipping fee promotion program with a freeship code worth up to 500,000 VND for sellers. For sellers who have participated in the Freeship Xtra package, the fee will not change. However, sellers who do not participate will be significantly affected. Shopee's new policy also adjusts return/refund fees.
Before April 1, 2025, Shopee will cover this cost if it is not the product or seller's fault. After April 1, 2025, sellers will have to bear all costs unless they register to use the PiShip service - a cost-saving shipping package with a fee of VND 2,300/order (including VAT). PiShip helps exempt return shipping up to VND 500,000. Shopee said that sellers will be able to use PiShip for free for the first 3 weeks from the first registration, between April 1 and April 30.
Not only Shopee, TikTok Shop also announced that it will apply a new commission fee schedule from April 1, 2025. Accordingly, the commission fee for regular sellers will increase from 3% to 4%. Notably, the commission fee for shops in the Shop Mall segment will increase from 4.54% - 5.78% to 6.05% - 7.7% (an average increase of about 2%). In addition, sellers will also have to pay an additional 5% transaction fee and shipping fee.
In addition to the two platforms above, from February 1, 2025, Lazada also increased the fixed fee from 3% to 4% and reduced the price of the Freeship max package from 8% to 6% of the order value. Lazada also announced that sellers participating in the Freeship max program will no longer be exempt from the fixed fee. Thus, calculating the total fees, sellers must share with the platform about 15% of revenue, 2% higher than before.
The increase in fees from e-commerce platforms has caused many sellers to react. Many people believe that the platform's high fee increase will force sellers to raise product prices and possibly lose a large number of customers. However, a Shopee representative said that these changes were carefully considered based on the market situation and the needs of buyers and sellers. Shopee affirmed that the adjusted fees will be reinvested in upgrading the platform and implementing solutions to support sustainable development for sellers. Meanwhile, TikTok Shop has not given a specific reason for the increase in commission fees. |
