After Tet, the price of grade 1 lemons was less than 10,000 VND/kg, but since the beginning of March, the price of lemons in Long An province has suddenly skyrocketed to 20,000 VND/kg sold at the garden.

Traders come to the garden to deposit, lemon price is 20,000 VND/kg

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Giang (44 years old, Huu Thanh commune, Duc Hoa district, Long An province) said that his family is currently growing seedless lemons on 1.2 hectares of land along the Vam Co Dong river.

According to Mr. Giang, on average, after harvesting 3 lemon crops each year, after deducting expenses, the profit is still 70 - 80 million VND/ha. There was a year when the price of lemon "dropped" to the lowest level of 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg. At this price, farmers only break even, and all the effort of growing lemons is wasted.

"Like this year, after Tet, the price of lemons dropped to only 5,000 - 6,000 VND/kg. Traders came to the garden to look at the lemons, bargained for the price and then left. Unexpectedly, a few days ago, traders came to the garden and asked for the price of lemons at 19,000 - 20,000 VND/kg, and they even brought the picking labor themselves to harvest," Mr. Giang smiled brightly.

Mr. Giang calculated that although this lemon crop is an off-season crop, with high yield and high price, selling out this lemon crop will "pocket" more than 220 million VND.

Currently, Ben Luc district has about 7,000 hectares of lemons, with an average annual output of about 110,000 tons. Gardeners mainly grow seedless lemons and purple-flowered lemons.

Currently, lemon prices are high because this is the off-season, while market demand increases sharply during the hot season.

Meanwhile, according to traders, the high price of lemons is due to high demand during the dry season for use in soft drinks. At the same time, the area of lemons bearing fruit near the end of the season is very small.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa (58 years old, residing in Binh Hoa Nam commune, Duc Hue district, Long An province) said that she is growing seedless lemons on an area of 3,500m2. Seedless lemons are easy to grow, require little effort and are very easy to sell.

Ms. Hoa shared that seedless lemons start to bear fruit after 16 - 18 months of planting, with a main crop yield of 5 tons/1,000 m2.

Many farmers in Ben Luc district are growing lemons according to GlobalGAP standards. By participating in the GlobalGAP lemon growing process, farmers are also supported by the company with output, ensuring a higher selling price than the market.

"With the current lemon price sold on the spot at 18,000 - 20,000 VND/kg, gardeners earn an average profit of 6,000 VND/kg," said Ms. Hoa.

According to the agricultural sector, the lemon variety that local people are currently growing is a highly economically efficient variety and is not picky about soil. If farmers take good care of it and water it sufficiently, they can achieve very high yields, earning more than 100 million VND/ha.

Up to now, the total area of lemon cultivation in Long An province (mainly seedless lemons) is 11,370 hectares, of which Ben Luc district alone has more than 7,100 hectares of land for lemon cultivation...

Lemons are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, providing a rich source of vitamin C. One lemon provides about 31 mg of vitamin C, accounting for 51% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) of vitamin C for each person. Lemons can help with weight loss and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, anemia, kidney stones, digestive problems and especially cancer...
