To develop tourism, especially for the international tourist market, Vietnam needs to calculate, build promotion strategies, advertise, restructure the market and reposition the brand.

Efforts to restore the tourism industry
According to data from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, in 2023, Vietnam's tourism had a spectacular recovery, exceeding the set target when the tourism industry welcomed 12.6 million international visitors, exceeding 57% of the original target and reaching the adjusted target (12-13 million). Domestic visitors reached 108 million, exceeding 6% of the 2023 plan. Total revenue from tourism is estimated at 678 trillion VND, exceeding 4.3% of the 2023 plan.
With the impressive acceleration of the tourism industry since the end of 2023, especially the positive signals in the beginning of the new year 2024, it is a premise for Vietnamese tourism to "breakthrough" in 2024. However, according to many experts, in the recovery journey, Vietnamese tourism still faces many challenges and gaps in policies as well as the competitiveness of domestic enterprises.
It can be said that the resilience of the tourism industry in the past year was thanks to changes in visa policies towards more openness. This openness has brought golden opportunities for Vietnamese tourism when for 5 consecutive months in 2023 - the number of international visitors each month reached over 1 million people.
A survey by Vietnam Report shows that 92.9% of businesses consider the new visa policy as a "lever" to help our country's tourism continue to grow this year. However, to make Vietnam an attractive destination that can attract millions of tourists to explore in five years, it is still necessary to increase the number of visa-free countries and make entry procedures more convenient.
Expected breakthrough in 2024
2024 is an opportunity for businesses to review their development strategies and research new potential markets such as the Middle East, India, etc. According to the forecast of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), international tourism activities can fully recover by the end of 2024, equal to the level achieved in 2019, but the recovery level is uneven in different regions. In addition, the needs of international tourists are constantly changing, requiring increasingly high product quality, experience, diversity and uniqueness.
Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) Nguyen Trung Khanh commented that after nearly 2 years of implementing recovery measures, Vietnam's tourism is growing. 2024 will be the time for tourism to accelerate and increase its competitiveness with countries in the region.

In 2024, the tourism industry aims to welcome 17-18 million international visitors; serve 110 million domestic visitors; and total tourism revenue reaches about 840 trillion VND. Right at the beginning of the new year 2024, during the New Year holiday, many provinces and cities achieved impressive numbers in terms of visitors and revenue, higher than in 2023.
This figure demonstrates the determination of the tourism industry to fully recover, posing significant challenges in competing with countries in the region, with the image of Vietnamese tourism enhanced and positioned more clearly on the world map.
It can be said that this is the time for tourism to accelerate and increase its competitiveness with other countries in the region. Many provinces and cities have set high goals for tourism development. Major localities such as Hanoi strive to welcome 26.5 million visitors, including 5 million international visitors; Ho Chi Minh City is determined to welcome about 40 million visitors, including 5 million international visitors...
However, according to experts, in 2024, the global and Vietnamese tourism industries will still face many difficulties and challenges. Specifically, the world situation continues to be unpredictable; economic growth slows down, greatly affecting the psychology and spending ability of tourists... In addition, the needs of international tourists are constantly changing, in which the trend of applying information technology, artificial intelligence and digital transformation will promote the formation of new ways of traveling. This is a challenge that forces tourism businesses to flexibly change their business organization to suit actual conditions.
Therefore, to develop tourism, especially for the international tourist market, Vietnam needs to calculate, build a promotion strategy, advertise, restructure the market and reposition the brand. When tourists have carefully considered their trips, they will tend to go deeper, learn and experience more deeply the culture, cuisine and life of that tourist destination.
Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung commented that in 2023, Vietnam tourism welcomed 12.6 million international visitors; total revenue from tourism activities is estimated at 678 trillion VND. With the impressive acceleration of the tourism industry since the end of 2023, especially the positive signals in the beginning of the new year 2024, Vietnam tourism can achieve the set target, fully recovering to the pre-Covid-19 period.
Minister Nguyen Van Hung said that the Ministry has requested the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism to continue advising on perfecting institutions and policies, reviewing shortcomings that need to be adjusted; and collaborating with ministries and branches to create policies to develop product types such as agricultural tourism, digital transformation in tourism, etc.
“In the coming time, the tourism industry will strengthen tourism statistics; promote tourism promotion; focus on training highly qualified human resources, especially those proficient in foreign languages and technology,” Mr. Nguyen Van Hung emphasized.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Ky, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietravel Company, said that Vietnam tourism is growing again, but looking at other countries, the growth is still modest, typically Thailand has a number of tourists far exceeding Vietnam. Therefore, for tourism to make a breakthrough, there needs to be a comprehensive change in awareness, methods, product promotion and image of Vietnam tourism.
With its achievements, Vietnam's tourism industry has been honored to receive many prestigious international awards, including 19 world-leading awards and 54 Asian-leading awards presented by the World Travel Awards (WTA). Vietnam was honored as the "World's Leading Heritage Destination" for the fourth time and "Asia's Leading Destination" for the fifth time. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism was awarded the title of "Asia's Leading Tourism Management Agency" for the fourth time. At the same event, many Vietnamese tourism destinations and businesses received other prestigious awards. |
