HCM City Enterprises that want to innovate need to start with small technology and product models and then develop with a larger vision, according to Dr. Nguyen Thanh My.
The message was shared by Dr. My, who owns more than 400 patents worldwide, during the discussion on innovation for sustainable growth, within the framework of the International Innovation Event InnoEx 2023, held on the morning of August 24 in Ho Chi Minh City. He said that to be innovative, one needs to have small ideas to change traditional methods and then develop them into new products.
According to him, the generation of people with different thinking, always thinking of new things, is considered very suitable to change technology, contributing to changing the country and the world.
As the head of 14 technology companies, Dr. My believes that change can be risky, even a failure. However, failure will help people learn and motivate them to do something else faster. "Implementing 10 ideas, if only 3 are successful, is very good, as long as the person is willing to do it," he said. The 68-year-old inventor has done small but practical projects such as buoys to measure salinity, sending parameters to smartphones, so that farmers know when the water is salty and when it is no longer salty.
After initial success, he thought about solving the problem of dirty food. He carried out 3 high-tech agricultural projects at the same time in Cu Lao Long Tri: Smart Fertilizer (specializing in smart fertilizers), Rynan Technologies (specializing in smart water meters, in-car temperature sensors) and Rynan Agrifoods (specializing in producing multi-layer packaging to help preserve agricultural products for a long time without chemicals)...

From his own experience, he said that the happiest thing for every inventor is when there is still creativity, creating new products and services. It is important for an inventor to choose colleagues around him who are happy when doing research. Therefore, when choosing colleagues, he follows two criteria: motivation and expertise. However, he believes that creative motivation is a factor in human nature, difficult to change. Expertise can be completely learned. People with motivation always learn quickly and well. "Choose motivated people, then work with them, challenge them, and support them to do what you want to do," Mr. My concluded.
Mr. Albert Antoine, Singapore Government Advisor, said that every creator needs to have a big vision, but when starting to do something, they need to start with a small project, experiment to assess the risks, then develop larger-scale ideas. However, failure also needs to be faced early and experienced quickly so that creators can continue to learn from failure for better products.
According to Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Duong Anh Duc, the world economy has gone through many difficult periods, the business environment has changed a lot, causing the old model to be under a lot of pressure and gradually lose its position. This raises the issue of the need for innovation, creating new business models, helping to change the country's position. However, innovation is not easy, it requires investment, a lot of time, resources, perseverance and the spirit of accepting failure. Ho Chi Minh City leaders recognize that all innovation starts from thinking, the cooperation of businesses, and the creativity of the community.
