Google's Google Play Protect service has just been updated with a real-time threat detection feature. It searches for potentially malicious apps on your phone by analyzing their behavior and alerts you.

Google first introduced this feature at its I/O 2024 developer event. It's currently available on the Google Pixel 6 and newer.

The company said that “in the coming months”, devices from Lenovo, OnePlus, Nothing, Oppo... will also be equipped.

The feature targets hard-to-detect, well-hidden malicious apps. Instead of scanning for malware, Play Protect looks for signs of suspicious apps.

It builds on Android's on-device security infrastructure called Private Compute Core, which keeps user data safe. Users will receive alerts to take action if needed.

Google is also rolling out another security feature: spam call detection. It uses on-device AI to analyze calls and look for signs that the caller is a scammer.

If it detects typical conversation patterns or requests of scams, it will report them to the user and encourage them to stop the call.

This feature is also new to Pixel 6 and above and will come to other Android phones in the future.
