Ensure water source for spring crop production

Việt NamViệt Nam21/03/2025

This spring crop, Mai Son district planted more than 1,200 hectares of rice. Right after Tet, farmers in the communes proactively dredged canals; localities and units strengthened management, effectively exploited irrigation works, regulated water appropriately, and ensured water sources for spring crop production.

The irrigation system of Vuong Me village, Chieng Ve commune, Mai Son district is responsible for providing irrigation water to serve agricultural production for nearly 90 hectares of two-crop rice of the commune. However, due to the circulation of storm No. 2 in 2024, the flood water poured in, causing the stream to be silted up, affecting many areas of people's fields. To ensure water for people's agricultural production, the Branch of Son La Irrigation Works Management and Exploitation Company Limited in Mai Son has adjusted the flow, along with building protective embankments, ensuring water for planting according to the crop schedule.

Ms. Luong Thi Thieu, Vuong Me village, Chieng Ve commune, Mai Son, Son La: "In previous years, there was often a drought in the spring crop, making it impossible to cultivate. This year, thanks to the government's investment in building new irrigation canals, we have enough water to grow two crops. We are very happy."

In recent years, the amount of rainfall at the beginning of the year has decreased significantly, posing a risk of serious drought. It is estimated that about 10% of the spring rice area in Mai Son district lacks irrigation water. In this situation, the Branch has actively coordinated with local authorities to encourage people to change crops and appropriate crop structures in areas severely affected by drought.

Mr. Lo Van So, Co Noi commune, Mai Son, Son La: "In previous years, when there was no drought, my family's 7,000m2 field could still grow spring crops. In the past 2 years, the water supply was not enough, so the agricultural extension team also recommended that people switch to vegetables to save water and avoid leaving the land fallow."

Mr. Nguyen Van Thiep, Head of the irrigation team at Co Noi commune, Mai Son, Son La: "We have coordinated with the irrigation team at the grassroots level to encourage people to switch to growing sweet corn, vegetables and short-term crops, so that we can start the crop season in May and June."

The Son La Irrigation Works Management and Exploitation Company Limited Branch in Mai Son currently manages 187 irrigation works with a total length of more than 200 km of canals supplying water to more than 1,200 hectares of rice. Currently, the Branch has assigned staff and workers to coordinate with grassroots irrigation teams to manage, exploit and regulate, ensuring enough water for the spring crop production in 2025.

Mr. Phan Viet Hung, Head of the Son La Irrigation Works Management and Exploitation Company Limited Branch in Mai Son: “Mai Son Irrigation Branch has coordinated with the People's Committees of communes, village management and grassroots irrigation teams to launch the 2024-2025 dry season irrigation campaign, mobilizing dredging from the main to the inner-field canals. To prevent drought in the spring crop, we regularly maintain machinery, check equipment such as pumps to be ready to respond, and take advantage of sources in ponds and lakes to pump water to prevent drought in the most urgent and urgent way”.

Currently, the spring irrigation water supply in Mai Son district has been fully met. The monitoring of reservoir water levels has been strictly implemented by localities to regulate appropriately and save to the maximum. In areas lacking water, specific solutions have been deployed to overcome drought, ensuring the completion of the planting plan on schedule./.
