How does a trillion dollar university give scholarships to students?

According to regulations, public universities spend at least 8% of tuition revenue to provide scholarships to encourage students to study.

Decree 84/2020 of the Government details a number of articles of the Law on Education, for higher education institutions: scholarships to encourage learning are arranged at least equal to 8% of tuition revenue for public schools and at least 2% of tuition revenue for private schools.

The revenue of trillion-dollar universities accounts for the majority of the total revenue of universities. So how many scholarships do trillion-dollar universities give to encourage students to study?

Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry: More than 54 billion VND

According to the 2023-2024 school year announcement (updated November 2024) of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, the total revenue of the school is 1,011 billion VND. Of which, the revenue from tuition and fees from students is 907.4 billion VND. The school spends 54.16 billion VND on scholarships and student support.

In addition to revenue, this university's report also includes operating expenses, including research expenses.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy: More than 31.4 billion VND

At the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, the school's report includes two scholarship expenses: scholarship for study encouragement and new students. Of which, the scholarship for study encouragement for the 2023-2024 school year was awarded to 849 students with a total value of more than 31.4 billion VND. The scholarship for new students was awarded to 173 people with a value of more than 3.35 billion VND.

Tuition revenue of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy for the 2023-2024 school year is 675 billion VND.

Ton Duc Thang University: Over 29 billion VND

Meanwhile, Ton Duc Thang University has publicly reported the amount of scholarships, tuition exemptions, and student support of the university in 2023, but there is no information on the specific amount of money spent on scholarships to encourage learning.

The total amount of scholarships, tuition exemptions, and student support of the school for the 2022-2023 school year is over 29 billion VND.

Scholarships, rewards, and student support (including external scholarship sources) total more than 26.5 billion VND.

The school's revenue from tuition fees this school year is over 963 billion VND.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology: 70 billion VND

Many other universities publish scholarship information for students, but Tuoi Tre Online could not find any publicly reported information like the three universities above.

At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, in the public information for the 2023-2024 school year, the school informed that in 2025 the school will set aside about 70 billion VND for the study encouragement scholarship fund to consider granting to students with good academic and training results.

Tuition revenue of Hanoi University of Science and Technology for the 2023-2024 school year is 1,340 billion VND.
