On March 13, Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital ( Quang Binh ) announced that doctors from the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation and the Department of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery had just successfully performed surgery on Mr. T. (102 years old, in Hoan Lao town, Bo Trach district), who suffered a fracture of the left femur .
According to the medical records, Mr. T. was admitted to the hospital in severe pain, unable to move his left leg after a domestic accident. X-ray results determined that he had a femoral intertrochanteric fracture - a common injury in the elderly due to osteoporosis . Without surgical intervention, he is at risk of facing a series of dangerous complications such as pneumonia, bedsores, deep vein thrombosis, and even life-threatening complications.

After a multidisciplinary consultation, the doctors decided to apply the PFNA intramedullary nailing method - a minimally invasive technique that helps fix the bone firmly and shortens recovery time. The surgery lasted about 45 minutes. During the entire process, the patient was always conscious, with vital signs such as blood pressure and heart rate stable without the need for respiratory support.
Dr. Nguyen Huu Luan, Deputy Head of the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, shared that for people over 100 years old, anesthesia is a big challenge due to the risk of hemodynamic disorders and cardiovascular complications. The team chose the method of pelvic anesthesia combined with low-dose spinal anesthesia, which effectively reduces pain but does not inhibit the circulatory and respiratory systems, minimizing postoperative risks.
Currently, Mr. T. has recovered well, can move lightly and has been discharged from the hospital. The successful surgery not only helped Mr. T. regain mobility but also demonstrated the hospital's progress in treating elderly patients, bringing new hope to many elderly people in need of surgical intervention.
