Traditional drink, many health benefits
Doctors at the Clinical Nutrition Center of K Hospital said that tea is a popular drink made from the camellia sinensis plant. Based on the level of oxidation of tea, it is divided into 3 main types:
- Green tea is a type of tea that does not undergo oxidation, most teas in Vietnam belong to this group.
- Oolong tea is partially oxidized tea.
- Black tea is created when tea leaves are completely oxidized.
There are also fresh tea, white tea, green tea powder... Tea contains polyphenols, alkaloids (such as caffeine, theophylline, theobromines), fluorine, aluminum, minerals and trace elements.
In the polyphenols group, catechins (including many compounds such as EGCG, EGC, ECG, EC) and theaflavins, thearubigins are believed to bring health benefits due to their antioxidant activity.
Green tea contains higher levels of catechins than other teas. Black tea contains more theaflavins and thearubigins. Oolong tea contains a mixture of these. Processed or decaffeinated teas have reduced levels of polyphenols.
According to experts, the cancer prevention effects of tea have been mostly studied with green tea .
Tea polyphenols have been shown to inhibit cell division and induce tumor cell death, inhibit tumor angiogenesis, and inhibit tumor cell invasion in vitro and in animals.
It can also protect against DNA damage caused by UV B rays and regulate immune function.
Human studies have shown inconsistent results regarding the cancer-preventive effects of tea, with some studies suggesting that drinking tea may reduce the risk of colon, breast, ovarian, prostate, and lung cancers. Other studies have failed to demonstrate this effect.
More valuable clinical studies have not yet reached a general conclusion about the anti-cancer effects of green tea. Therefore, more time and research are needed to confirm the anti-cancer effects of tea on humans.

Note when drinking tea
Tea is very good, but drinking tea in large quantities also has some disadvantages. Because tea contains caffeine, drinking too much can cause insomnia, palpitations, tremors, nausea, vomiting, etc.
Tea also contains aluminum. When aluminum accumulates in the body, it can cause osteoporosis and neurodegeneration, especially in people with kidney failure.
Additionally, tea can limit the absorption of dietary iron. Drinking tea between meals may limit this side effect.
"Green tea can be used daily as a beverage. Patients undergoing cancer treatment should use tea because it contains antioxidants that are very good for the patient's body.
However, you should not drink tea at night because it will affect your sleep and you should not use too much to avoid unwanted side effects," doctors at the Clinical Nutrition Center of K Hospital emphasized.
To effectively prevent cancer, health experts recommend a healthy diet, adequate sleep, no smoking, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding alcohol, getting fully vaccinated, and regular general cancer screening.
