What is Clean Energy Charging technology on iOS 16.1?
Clean Energy Charging on iOS 16.1 is a feature that helps reduce users' carbon emissions based on certain charging habits and local carbon emissions forecasts.
This feature allows users to charge their Smartphone whenever there is an environmentally friendly power source such as solar power or wind power. At the same time, the charging process will pause when the power source is no longer available and you will receive a notification on your device immediately afterwards.
Clean Power Charging will not activate without notifying the user. If the feature pauses charging, the notification will let the user know when the device will reach 100%, similar to Optimized Battery Charging.
Currently, this feature is only allowed in the US and is not available in Vietnam. Therefore, even if you use the high-end iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB purple, you cannot use this feature. With the convenience that Clean Energy Charging brings, users can completely look forward to the appearance of this feature in Vietnam in the near future.
When clean energy charging is activated
iPhone Clean Power Charging activates when:
- The user is in a Key Location where they will spend a long time such as home, work, or school.
- Carbon footprint forecasting tells iPhone that high carbon footprint is expected while the device is plugged in.
- Based on user behavior, the iPhone knows it will be plugged in for several hours, meaning while the user is sleeping or standing still at a desk.
- The device has a cleaner power standby time provided when plugged in and when unplugged, so the device can still reach 100%.
- These requirements mean that Clean Energy Charging is likely to only activate overnight while the user is sleeping. They work in conjunction with Optimized Battery Charging to ensure battery life is maintained and carbon emissions are minimised.
- Clean Power Charging will not activate when traveling or in any new location other than Significant Places. Location data is not shared with Apple and is only used for algorithms.
To turn off Clean Energy Charging, Open the Settings app > Battery > Battery Health & Charging > Turn off Clean Energy Charging.
