Writer and artist Tran Thi Truong called to announce that she is about to open a joint exhibition with a group of four artists: Tran Thi Truong, Le Thieu Ngan, Nguyen Thi Huyen and Nguyen Ba Thanh. The exhibition, named “Mien Thuong”, will take place from December 23-29, 2024, at the National Museum of Fine Arts, 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Hanoi.
The name of the exhibition sounds a bit “corny”. When I said this, writer Tran Thi Truong explained: When artists create, no matter what the subject is: society, landscape, still life, or portrait... they all love and put into their paintings the most loving and cherishing feelings, to create beautiful paintings, valuable works. With that meaning, the 4 artists chose the name Mien Thuong for the group exhibition.
Even the combination of four people in an exhibition is a completely emotional combination. Among the four, there are two artists who are over 70 years old: Artist Tran Thi Truong and Artist Le Thieu Ngan. But if you look at their paintings, you will see that they are still full of creativity. It is as if age does not hinder their passion for color and composition. The two remaining artists, Nguyen Thi Huyen, were born in 1975, and Nguyen Ba Thanh, were born in 1999. In terms of age, it seems like a generational continuation, but in terms of painting, there is no generation gap, because the two older female artists also started their painting careers not long ago.
Among them, writer and painter Tran Thi Truong is a familiar face. She is famous for her writing, but since entering the path of painting, her name has become more widely known. Studying painting from 1965-1973, in the art class of painter Pham Viet Song, in 1973 she passed the University of Industrial Fine Arts, but left her studies unfinished, not graduating. She has worked as a journalist and writer for many years, leaving her mark in 7 collections of short stories, 3 novels "Last Words for You", "The Madman" and "Hoai Street". She lived and worked in Bulgaria during the 1980s and visited the US many times.
In 2019, Tran Thi Truong returned to easel art, under the guidance of artist Hai Kien. She had a solo exhibition called “Emotions in Color” in December 2019, at 16 Ngo Quyen, Hanoi. She also opened an exhibition with artist Le Thieu Ngan. And participated in group exhibitions in Hanoi.
I have been close to writer Tran Thi Truong for a long time, never thought that one day she would pick up a brush to paint. From the first paintings, which were quite “bewildering”, now I know that every painting she finished was bought right away before the paint dried. It seems that buyers like her still life and rose paintings, which have a Western style but still retain the Eastern femininity.
In her works, Tran Thi Truong chose still life as the main subject of her work, considering still life to have a soul and to be able to "dialogue" with people.
Artist Le Thieu Ngan is the same age as writer and artist Tran Thi Truong. She used to be a lecturer at the University of Foreign Languages - Hanoi National University. She graduated with a PhD in Linguistics from St. Petersburg State University (Russian Federation). In 2008, she studied watercolor painting in Tokyo, Japan with two artists Shoko Ohta and Suiko Ohta. In 2012, she studied oil painting with artist Van Duong Thanh. Since 2020, she has studied oil painting with artist Nguyen Hai Kien.
She exhibited her paintings at the Cultural Office, Embassy of Vietnam in Tokyo, Japan in 2009, 2010; participated in the annual watercolor exhibition with Japanese artists in 2009, 2010, 2011. Painter Le Thieu Ngan exhibited her solo exhibition at Thu Huong Gallery in 2014. In addition, she participated in many group exhibitions and had her paintings displayed in many exhibitions and museums in Korea, Japan...
Nguyen Thi Huyen is a name that seems new but it is not, she has appeared for a long time in the art world, has paintings in a number of collections but the female artist is quiet, reserved and afraid of contact with the outside world. Living more introverted, Nguyen Thi Huyen is successful with a liberal brushwork and gouache materials. But when painting with oil paint, she also shows an ability to master emotions, gentle expression of color but strong in expression. Artist Nguyen Thi Huyen was born in Hung Yen, in a rather special family, with a mother who is a farmer and a father who is a painter. When she was 10 years old, her family moved to Hanoi, in the dormitory of lecturers at Yet Kieu School (Hanoi University of Fine Arts). In her works, she exploits the simple beauty of familiar images in life.
“I exploit the subtle changes of color, of volume, the gentle spread of light. Although they are very gentle, somewhat fragile, they are no less lively. A peaceful space with the dancing of color harmony, of light, although not intense, is enough to make us feel a vibrant life inside. Through my works, in addition to wanting to preserve the simple, pure beauty around. As a woman, I also aim for peace of mind and life.” – artist Nguyen Thi Huyen confided.
The youngest in this exhibition group is Nguyen Ba Thanh, very young, but always mentioned since his university days, successful with watercolors.
Painter Nguyen Ba Thanh is from Thai Binh, graduated from the Central University of Fine Arts. He is a member of the Hanoi Watercolor Club. He has participated in many exhibitions and competitions on watercolor painting in the country and internationally. Before working with watercolor, Nguyen Ba Thanh studied many other materials such as lacquer, oil painting, wood carving... With each material, he works with serious and meticulous research.
Nguyen Ba Thanh pursues the realism school and he chooses watercolor as the material for his painting career because of the clarity of this material. The subjects in Thanh's paintings are often close and familiar, often using bright colors.
Thanh won the Encouragement Prize at the 2023 National Fine Arts Exhibition, First Prize at the "Brilliant Poland" contest organized by the Polish Embassy in Hanoi...
As a young artist, he always has a spirit of learning. With the desire to bring art to life and live with art. For him, painting is not only a passion but also a constant effort and its results are gifts to everyone and to himself.
