TPO - The price of live pigs in many southern provinces and cities is still high (over 80,000 VND/kg), of which Dong Nai has a price of up to 83,000 VND/kg (the highest in the country). The increase in the price of live pigs has led to an increase in the price of pork sold on the market, making both sellers and buyers worried.
Feverish because of price
On the afternoon of March 10, right at the end of the shift, thousands of workers of Pouyuen Company (Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City) quickly poured out of the factory gate. Not in a hurry to go home, Ms. Nguyen Thi Trang (45 years old, from Dong Thap) went to a nearby market to buy food to prepare dinner for her family. Passing by the familiar pork stall, Ms. Trang picked up a piece of ham and was quoted 155,000 VND/kg.
The seller encouraged her to buy a whole kilo for a discount of 5,000 VND. After a moment of hesitation, Ms. Trang put down the piece of meat and went to a nearby chicken wing stall, buying half a kilo of chicken wings for less than 30,000 VND.
“Pork is too expensive so I can eat it once in a while. I replace it with chicken, eggs, tofu... it's still delicious and cheap,” said Trang.
The high price of pork has made both small traders and housewives fed up. |
According to Ms. Trang, a family meal consisting of two parents and a small child only costs about 50,000 VND/day, so they have to calculate to make sure it is just enough.
At Pham Van Hai market (Binh Tan district), Ms. Lanh (a pork vendor) lamented that there are few customers but the price of pork continues to increase. “Since the beginning of the year, the price of pork has continuously increased. Some types have increased by up to 50,000 VND/kg. The high price and lack of customers, I have to take less meat, mainly selling to regular customers to sell food, but the number of regular customers has also decreased by nearly 1/3” – Ms. Lanh sighed.
A survey of pork prices at many traditional markets in Ho Chi Minh City such as Ba Chieu (Binh Thanh District), Ban Co (District 3), Phu Lam (District 6)... shows that young ribs are priced from 200,000 - 240,000 VND/kg, pork chops 160,000 - 180,000 VND/kg, lean thigh 140,000 VND/kg... At Hoc Mon wholesale market (Hoc Mon district), the wholesale price of grade 1 pork has reached over 100,000 VND/kg. The supply of pork to the market continues to be low due to limited purchasing power.
Stabilization efforts
Faced with the sharp increase in pork prices, the Department of Industry and Trade and the Department of Finance of Ho Chi Minh City are implementing measures to stabilize the market. One of the proposed solutions is to increase the supply of alternative foods such as chicken, duck, fish, and eggs to give people more options.
Explaining the need to adjust pork prices, a representative of Vissan Company said that it was due to a sharp increase in the price of live pigs. Specifically, from 67,000 VND/kg (price review date December 30, 2024), the price of live pigs at VISSAN warehouse increased to 78,000 VND/kg on March 3, 2025, equivalent to an increase of 16.4%. This increase comes from a decrease in the supply of live pigs due to the impact of African swine fever, the price of animal feed remains high and production costs increase.
Workers choose to buy fish, chicken, eggs, green vegetables... which are affordable and nutritious. |
“Currently, the supply of live pigs is under pressure due to the epidemic, forcing many farmers to sell their pigs early, leading to a shortage of pigs that meet the standard weight. In addition, some large livestock enterprises tend to reduce their herds, making the supply even more scarce. However, we still maintain the supply thanks to a stable chain linkage system. The company proactively purchases from strategic partners and strengthens the management of input pigs to ensure uninterrupted production. At the same time, we will continue to coordinate with distributors to implement stimulus programs, sharing difficulties with consumers in the context of fluctuating market prices,” said a representative of Vissan.
Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Phuong - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City commented that the increase in pork prices is consistent with the current situation.
According to Mr. Phuong, this is also a step to screen out spontaneous breeding facilities, helping production move towards industrialization and ensuring safety against diseases. “The current price increase will be suitable for production costs as well as stimulate breeders to restore their herds. After a while, when the product life cycle is stable, prices tend to decrease again, thanks to increased supply,” Mr. Phuong commented.
According to the Dong Nai Province Livestock Association, the number of pigs raised has increased sharply on large-scale farms of enterprises. Therefore, the shortage of supply will only last for a short period. In the second quarter of 2025, the supply will return to abundance.
Although pork prices remain high, Ho Chi Minh City does not lack supply, so people can shop with peace of mind.
On March 3, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Finance adjusted the prices of some pork products in the price stabilization program. Accordingly, pork chops had the strongest increase, from 147,000 VND/kg to 160,000 VND/kg, shoulder meat increased by 12,000 VND/kg to 156,000 VND/kg, while lean shoulder meat and thigh meat were also adjusted from 166,000 VND/kg to 177,000 VND/kg. The Department of Finance affirmed that after the adjustment, the price of stabilized pork is still 5-20% lower than the average price of the same type in the market, in accordance with the program's regulations. At the same time, the Department requested businesses to proactively promote and reduce prices appropriately to stimulate consumption.
