Thach Thanh Irrigation Branch (under Song Chu Company Limited) is assigned to manage, exploit and operate 12 reservoirs, 1 dam, and 24 pumping stations. The system has effectively served production, ensuring irrigation for nearly 5,650 hectares of crops in the 2025 winter-spring crop, including 2,965 hectares of rice. Currently, the branch has provided enough water for farmers in the area to care for and irrigate the entire winter-spring rice area.
Cong Khe Lake (Ngoc Lac) has stored enough water according to design to irrigate crops.
Director of Thach Thanh Irrigation Branch Nguyen Ngoc Tho said: In order to effectively promote irrigation works to serve irrigation water for the 2025 winter-spring crop, in recent months, Thach Thanh Irrigation Branch has proactively inspected, maintained, repaired, and ensured the safety of reservoirs. Assigned engineers and workers to take shifts at the project site to resolve incidents and operate promptly to serve production. Mobilized all human resources of the unit and reserve materials to complete the repair of damaged canals; inspected, maintained, and repaired machinery and equipment of pumping stations; dredged canals managed by the unit and sedimented suction tanks with a total volume of nearly 6,000m3. Some works such as the main canal of Tay Trac Lake have been completed and repaired by the unit, promoting efficiency in serving production. Thach Thanh District has mobilized people to do irrigation in the fields and fields; Communes have proactively repaired, dredged and led water to reservoirs and developed plans to combat drought and regulate irrigation water appropriately for crops to grow well.
By March 2025, the province will have 610 reservoirs. Of which, there is an important reservoir related to national security, Cua Dat Lake (Thuong Xuan), with a total capacity of 1.45 billion m3. In addition to the main task of irrigating crops, reservoirs also have the task of reducing floods during the rainy and stormy seasons, providing water for daily life, industrial production, aquaculture, and improving the ecological environment in the region...
However, of the total number of lakes mentioned above, 174 reservoirs are full of water, 436 reservoirs are lower than the normal water level. Of which, there are still 150 reservoirs and 104 dams mainly concentrated in mountainous districts such as Cam Thuy, Thach Thanh, Thuong Xuan, Ngoc Lac, Ba Thuoc, Nhu Thanh... that have been seriously degraded and damaged, affecting agricultural production.
According to the forecast of Thanh Hoa Irrigation Department, the water supply area from large lakes and dams has an area of 3,500ha to 4,100ha that is likely to experience water shortages and droughts affecting the productivity of spring-summer crops. Concentrated mainly in the tail canal area of the canal system taking water from Cua Dat Lake (Bai Thuong system, North Chu River - South Ma River system), Song Muc Lake, Yen My Lake. The water supply area from lakes, dams, and small irrigation works with an area likely to experience water shortages and droughts affecting productivity ranges from 1,900ha to 2,100ha, mainly concentrated in the midland and mountainous areas.
To proactively provide water for crop irrigation, the authorities have focused on allocating investment capital to repair and upgrade 24 damaged reservoirs. Irrigation construction companies and localities with irrigation dams have implemented measures to overcome difficulties and exploit reservoir water sources for crop irrigation. At the same time, they have developed and implemented safety protection plans for each reservoir, especially for reservoirs and dams under construction and severely degraded and damaged reservoirs. For irrigation areas, large dams and reservoirs such as Cua Dat and Doc Cay Hydropower Plants operate to generate electricity according to irrigation needs, ensuring water sources for the Bai Thuong system and the North Chu River - South Ma River canal system to serve production. There are measures to regulate and supplement water sources between works and related systems of works. For irrigation areas of lakes, dams, and small irrigation works, increase water storage, exploit and use irrigation water economically from the beginning of the crop to save water for the end of the spring-summer crop and the beginning of the summer-autumn crop. Repair damaged or degraded works that do not ensure water storage, reducing the exploitation capacity compared to the design; proactively install field pumps to pump water to serve drought prevention when the water level in reservoirs falls below the dead water level.
In the long term, it is recommended that sectors and levels pay attention to building new lakes and dams in mountainous areas according to planning to increase water storage capacity and exploit water for production. Build regulating lakes in low-lying areas to both store water and drain water, ensuring water security.
