Fresh Guangdong (China) lemons imported to Vietnam just 3 months ago are causing a "fever", with prices 3 times higher than Vietnamese goods.
In the market, Vietnamese seedless lemons are retailing at 15,000-20,000 VND per kilogram, while Guangdong lemons are 55,000-60,000 VND per kilogram, which is 3 times higher than Vietnamese products. However, this price has cooled down somewhat compared to August, when it was first introduced to Vietnam, when each kilogram was up to 100,000 VND.
Mr. Thanh, a Cantonese lemon seller in Hanoi, said he imports tons of lemons every day but they are all sold out.
Ms. Han, a fresh lemon seller in Binh Phuoc, also said that all orders were placed in large quantities despite the high prices. According to her, fresh Guangdong lemons are large, oval-shaped, pointed at both ends, have thick skin, are dark green, and have a characteristic aroma, with a faint scent of lemongrass and grapefruit.

Explaining the price increase of this type of lemon, the vendors said it was due to the influence of young Vietnamese people sucking on hand-pounded lemon tea . This drink appeared on all the streets in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Many points of sale recorded the situation of customers having to line up, take a number and wait their turn to buy. Each cup of hand-pounded lemon tea is sold for 20,000-35,000 VND.
The ingredient to make a cup of hand-pounded lemon tea is fresh Guangdong lemon (also known as Guangdong fragrant green lemon). This type is grown a lot in Guangdong city (China), quite similar to seedless lemon of Vietnam.
"Only this type of lemon can produce a glass of hand-pounded lemonade with the same full flavor as the original product in Guangdong. This time, hand-pounded lemon tea shops in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have expanded, so the purchase of lemons has increased by 10-20%," said Mr. Thanh.
Ms. Hanh - the owner of a milk tea shop in Binh Thanh (HCMC) - informed that her shop sells hundreds of cups of hand-pounded lemon tea every day. In recent days, the shop's sales have improved, in addition to customers buying at the counter, there are also online customers," she shared.
According to beverage stores, hand-pounded lemon tea has an attractive taste. When pounded by hand, it will have the full flavor of lemongrass, bamboo leaves, grapefruit and lemon essential oil without being bitter or astringent. When mixed, the lemon flavor is also very fragrant and delicious, without the need to add any ingredients. Currently, there is no type of lemon that can replace them.
Traders say that Guangdong lemons weigh 8-10 fruits per kilogram. This type of lemon also became a craze in China when the trend of hand-pounded lemon tea appeared.
