On May 9, at the signing ceremony of cooperation and opening of the Psoriasis Clinic of Thai Nguyen Central Hospital, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Huu Doanh, Director of the Central Dermatology Hospital, this transfer helps many specialized dermatological diseases to be managed locally.

"With psoriasis, this is a disease that requires lifelong treatment, it cannot be cured completely but can only be controlled. The specialized clinic is a place to manage patients and consult with specialists on difficult cases. Managing a chronic disease related to many organs of the body right at the local level helps patients to manage the disease best," said Associate Professor Doanh.

On the afternoon of May 9, being examined at the Psoriasis Clinic at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital, Dr. D.VM (born in 1959) said that he has had psoriasis for 20 years, and for that time he has been managing and re-examining at the Central Dermatology Hospital (Hanoi).

This time, instead of having to take a bus for 300,000 VND round trip, then carrying around his belongings and having makeshift meals, today he rode his motorbike to the Specialized Clinic for examination.

Directly re-examining the patient, Associate Professor Doanh said that he can completely rest assured to manage psoriasis locally.

"I feel more secure and less worried than every time I go to Hanoi for an appointment," said Dr. M.

According to Associate Professor Doanh, up to 50% of psoriasis patients feel confused, depressed, and pessimistic because of the damage to their entire body, requiring lifelong treatment and frequent hospital visits. Having a local psoriasis clinic helps patients reduce the pressure of having to travel far for follow-up visits.

Associate Professor Doanh added that, up to now, the hospital has received requests from more than 20 provincial general hospitals in the North, South, Central and Central Highlands regions for support in building clinics specializing in psoriasis.

"At the end of December 2023, the Hospital supported Yen Bai Provincial General Hospital to build a psoriasis clinic model. Since then, most psoriasis patients have been effectively managed and treated in this locality. Similarly, in Thai Nguyen, psoriasis patients are certainly well managed locally.

"In 2024, the hospital will work with provinces to establish these clinics. This is a series of activities in the development of specialized dermatology that the Central Dermatology Hospital carries out in a number of provinces and cities," said Associate Professor Doanh.

Psoriasis is one of the common chronic skin diseases in Vietnam as well as many countries in the world, accounting for about 2-3% of the population.

This is a benign, non-contagious skin disease that cannot be completely cured, but if treated early and properly, people with psoriasis can still live a life almost like a normal person.

However, this is a disease that requires lifelong treatment and is prone to relapse, causing many patients to become discouraged and listen to advertisements that claim to completely cure psoriasis, so they self-treat, causing serious consequences.

Associate Professor Doanh recommends that psoriasis patients absolutely do not listen to advertisements or word-of-mouth remedies to cure psoriasis. Psoriasis patients need to be monitored and managed.

Currently, with the advancement of medicine, there are many methods of treating psoriasis such as topical treatment, systemic treatment or light therapy, application of biological drugs. These methods can help control the disease, reduce negative psychological effects, and prevent and minimize complications.

The establishment of specialized clinics will help primary health care develop more professionally, helping to manage patients more comprehensively. Psoriasis patients can still access and use new drugs and methods similar to those at tertiary hospitals, while still being fully covered by the Health Insurance Fund.
