(Dan Tri) - A 23-month-old boy was taken to the Central Dermatology Hospital in a state of severe systemic infection.
On October 25, the Central Dermatology Hospital informed about a case of a child with severe psoriasis, treated by the family themselves.
Doctor Dang Tu Anh, Central Dermatology Hospital, said that at the time of admission, the child's entire body had many pus lesions concentrated in clusters on a red, sore, ulcerated, oozing, and peeling base.
The patient's mother said that when she was born, the baby was normal. But from 3 months old, the baby showed signs of itching, red skin, and small spots appeared on the neck and back, then spread throughout the body.
The family used many types of tobacco to bathe and many types of topical medications for the child, but the condition did not improve.
Especially in the past 3 months, the patient's skin damage has been very serious. The child's head is red and sore, with scaly patches. In addition, dense red patches also appear on the arms, legs, and face.
At the Central Dermatology Hospital, the child was diagnosed with psoriasis and had to be hospitalized for treatment.
The patient’s mother said that she herself had psoriasis and had been treated at the Central Dermatology Hospital. However, after recovering, she did not return for follow-up visits on time and also used many drugs of unknown origin when the disease relapsed.
Doctor Hoang Thi Phuong, Head of the Department of Daytime Inpatient Treatment, Central Dermatology Hospital said that psoriasis can occur at any age, including children.
Symptoms include red, scaly patches on the skin. In addition to the above symptoms, the disease may also cause swelling and joint pain, but this is less common in children than in adults; or other symptoms such as nail splitting, yellow nails, and rough nails.
"Psoriasis is a chronic disease that cannot be completely cured, but can be controlled to stabilize the disease and prevent flare-ups. Therefore, patients need to be monitored and re-examined as directed by their doctor.
Because of lifelong treatment and easy relapse, many patients are discouraged and listen to advertisements that promise to completely cure psoriasis, so they self-treat, causing serious consequences.
Patients should absolutely not arbitrarily use herbal medicine or use topical medications of unknown origin containing corticosteroids. Many people like to use them because as soon as they apply them, the condition improves very quickly, but then it often flares up violently," Dr. Phuong informed.
In addition, when having psoriasis, you should not use leaves for bathing, you should use shower gel or moisturizing soap to soften the skin.
Currently, with the advancement of medicine, there are many methods of treating psoriasis such as topical treatment, systemic treatment or light therapy, application of biological drugs. These methods can help control the disease, reduce negative psychological effects, and prevent and minimize complications.
The Central Dermatology Hospital said that, towards World Psoriasis Day (October 29), the hospital will organize a week of free examination and consultation for patients, lasting until October 29.
