Delegates attending the workshop: “The impact of Artificial Intelligence on journalism: Challenges and opportunities”.

Equipping journalists with the necessary AI skills

Speaking at the workshop, journalist Nguyen Thi Hai Van, Director of the Center for Journalism Training of the Vietnam Journalists Association, said: We are living in the era of the 4.0 technology revolution, where artificial intelligence (AI) is gradually becoming an indispensable part of many areas of social life. Journalism, as a bridge of information between the public and events, cannot be outside of that trend. AI not only changes the way journalism is done, but also brings unprecedented opportunities and challenges.

On the opportunity side, AI can help synthesize and analyze data more quickly, saving journalists time and effort in the process of researching and producing news and articles.

In addition, successful implementation of AI in newsrooms will help personalize content to suit the interests and needs of each audience, thereby increasing the interactivity and appeal of journalistic products. As a result, journalists will bring readers the news they want, in a more personal way and covering a wider range of topics.

Journalist Le Quoc Minh, member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, President of the Vietnam Journalists Association chaired the workshop.

Journalist Nguyen Thi Hai Van commented: The challenges that AI brings are not small. One of the biggest challenges that AI brings is the creation and spread of fake news.

Additionally, deep-fake technology uses AI to create fake videos and images, in which viewers may see images or videos of completely unreal events or characters. This increases the potential for misinformation to spread through visual media.

These opportunities and challenges require that news organizations, journalists, and practitioners be well-trained and prepared to use AI effectively, while ensuring trustworthiness and ethics in the dissemination of information. The use of AI can also lead to over-reliance on technology, reducing the role of humans in checking and verifying information.

Journalist Le Quoc Minh, member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association talks about the development of AI in journalism.

AI should be viewed as a support tool for journalists.

Journalist Le Quoc Minh, member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, said that artificial intelligence has made huge strides in the past 2 years. AI technologies bring both opportunities and threats to the journalism industry.

Over the past few decades, news organizations around the world have been struggling with declining advertising and print subscription revenues. AI technologies, if applied and deployed early to maximize their power, can have a positive impact on helping news organizations grow sustainably. AI platforms should pay news organizations for their content, and the content should be properly attributed.

Talking about the benefits that AI brings, journalist Le Quoc Minh shared: First, AI helps with programming, increasing productivity by 40%. AI helps with decoding, in which reporters decode video or audio into text content to write articles after attending press conferences. AI helps search and detect patterns in structured data for investigative reporters to use.

Journalist Le Quoc Minh said: "We should see AI as a tool to support journalists, that is the best thing. Each press agency should take advantage of technology and master technology."

In reality, in news organizations, whether the newsroom likes it or not, reporters are using AI. It’s better to guide their activities than to prohibit them from experimenting. However, set rules and ethical standards, and have a monitoring process. Reassure employees that using AI is to produce higher-quality content and use resources more efficiently.

Whether AI is applied or not, the press agency still needs to maintain its position, to continue to play the role of providing official information to the public... in the future, we also need to allow AI to interact to what extent, to what extent, to what extent to access information, all need to have standards and the application of AI needs to pay attention to the issue of press ethics.

Journalist Le Quoc Minh suggests: News agencies need to understand how AI affects reader behavior and experiment with new ways to meet the needs. News agencies should clearly identify the strengths of each newsroom and focus on these strengths. If that newsroom is strong in investigative reporting, improve your skills and capabilities...

Delegates spent time sharing experiences in their units to raise awareness and equip journalists to take advantage of the opportunities that AI brings.

" AI tools are made by humans, so how to use and invest in AI in the most appropriate way. The most important thing is that the press agency can take advantage of it and create efficiency during its operations. When using it, there should be understanding and based on the actual needs of the agency, unit, and locality. We should view AI as a tool to support journalists, which is the best thing. Each press agency should take advantage of technology and master technology, " emphasized journalist Le Quoc Minh.

Shorten production time, improve product quality

Sharing the impact of AI on journalism, journalist Le Xuan Trung - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper said: AI is considered a virtual assistant to support data for reporters and editors in the process of producing news articles on the electronic newsroom. The virtual assistant specializes in statistics on the time readers spend on the page, keywords, suggesting related news articles and warning topics for reporters and editorial secretaries.

"Tuoi Tre Newspaper has assigned AI to synthesize all daily news article suggestions from reporters and synthesize readers' feedback to serve as material for the morning news briefing. Previously, an administrative secretary had to do this task for 1-2 hours, which was quite tiring and passive. Now, AI does it very quickly, only 5-1 minute to complete the summary, without any complaints or lamentations," journalist Le Xuan Trung shared.
