In recent years, the trade situation between Vietnam and Malaysia has recorded many positive changes, demonstrating the connection and open cooperation potential between the two countries.

In the coming time, there is still much room to promote bilateral trade between Vietnam and Malaysia, especially in the context that both sides are making efforts to take advantage of opportunities from regional trade agreements that both sides are participating in, such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

This is a solid foundation to promote trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia to continuously develop in the future, including the export of Vietnamese pangasius.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnamese pangasius products consistently top the list of most popular white-fleshed fish in many markets. Malaysia is no exception.

Located in the ASEAN bloc - one of the largest free trade areas in the world, Vietnam's pangasius exports to this market have continuously grown in recent years.

A representative of Vasep said that the cumulative export of pangasius to the Malaysian market in the first 11 months of 2024 is estimated at about 31 million USD, an increase of more than 21% over the same period in 2023. The structure of Vietnamese pangasius exports to Malaysia is mainly frozen pangasius fillets with HS code 0304, in addition to other dried/frozen pangasius products (whole, cut into pieces...). Finally, value-added pangasius products, although the export value is still modest, clearly see the strong growth of these products to this country in the center of Southeast Asia.

In the first 11 months of 2024, exports of value-added pangasius products to Malaysia reached more than 1.5 million USD, an increase of more than 115% over the same period in 2023. Notably, the growth arrow of this product's exports each month was very impressive: January 2024 increased by 526%; March increased by 399%; May increased by 325%; June increased by 315%; July increased by 404%... compared to the same period last year.

Ms. Thu Hang, a pangasius market expert from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, shared that frozen pangasius fillets with HS code 0304 are the white meat fish products that Malaysia imports the most. Notably, Vietnam is the largest supplier of frozen pangasius fillets to Malaysia, accounting for 96% of the total imports of HS code 0304 products of this country.

Ms. To Thi Tuong Lan, Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, assessed that the Malaysian market is a Halal market. To master this market, tra fish exporting enterprises must comply with and implement Halal criteria well to be able to develop in this market./.
