According to the announcement from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), BMW is recalling a total of 720,796 vehicles across 11 different product lines. These models were manufactured between 2012 and 2018. Affected models include the X1, X3, X4, X5, Z4, 228i, 328i, 328xi Gran Turismo, 428i, 428xi and 528i.
The defect was found to be related to the water pump on the affected vehicles. Specifically, the water pump assembly is not fully sealed, allowing liquid to enter the electrical plug connector. This could cause a short circuit and potentially pose a fire risk in some cases.
BMW has just announced a recall of 720,796 vehicles across 11 product lines to fix water pump errors.
BMW said it has received 18 complaints and vehicle damage related to this defect. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or accidents related to this issue. However, to ensure customer safety, BMW decided to carry out this large-scale recall.
As part of this recall, BMW will inspect the water pump and connector on affected vehicles. If damage is found, the company will replace these components free of charge. Additionally, BMW will install an additional shield to prevent liquid from entering the water pump, reducing the risk of a malfunction.
Owners of the recalled models will be notified from October 4, 2024. Owners are advised to contact their authorized BMW dealers to take the necessary corrective action.
This recall follows a separate recall involving engine starters on sedans, coupes, SUVs, and convertibles in the U.S. The previous recall affected more than 105,000 vehicles and was notified to dealers on August 1, 2024. Affected owners will be notified by mail starting September 23, 2024.
