High school graduation exam scores are still important, candidates should not ignore them
The representative of the Ministry of Education and Training noted the above at the Admissions and Career Counseling Day taking place at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. It is estimated that about 20,000 parents and students attended the festival.
Sharing at the 2024 Admissions and Career Counseling Day taking place at the University of Technology - Ho Chi Minh City National University (268 Ly Thuong Kiet, District 10, Ho Chi Minh City), Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy - Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) - said that in the next few days, the ministry will issue regulations for the 2024 high school graduation exam.
The new regulations mainly adjust the technical aspects to ensure a safe and serious exam, ensuring fairness for all candidates. For candidates, the most important thing is the appendix of foreign language certificates used to exempt high school graduation exams in foreign languages.
In April 2024, candidates will register for the high school graduation exam. After completing the exam, they will have the exam results before registering for university admission. At that time, candidates will know their graduation exam scores and early admission results announced by universities.
"You should note that even though you have been admitted early, you have not yet officially passed. According to regulations, candidates must continue to register their wishes on the general admission system of the Ministry of Education and Training. Candidates must rank their wishes in order of priority, with their favorite major at the top.
This year's admission registration has almost no changes compared to last year, being done entirely online. Within the time limit announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, candidates are allowed to adjust their wishes. If a candidate has passed the first wish and then wants to pass the fifth wish, they cannot change it anymore," Ms. Thuy said.
According to Ms. Thuy, this year, although some universities may not consider admission based on academic transcripts or high school graduation exam scores, nearly 100% of universities still reserve a certain number of quotas for these admission methods. Therefore, the high school graduation exam is still extremely important, and this result affirms the students' learning ability during high school.

How to study in combination and test your ability?
A parent wondered: " What will happen to next year's competency assessment exam when students study different subject combinations, some study combinations and some do not? Will the exam be different this year? Last year, we took the competency assessment exam but did not register to choose any school, will we be allowed to use that exam result to apply to any school this year?"
MSc. Phung Quan - University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - said that the 2025 Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam will definitely be different from this year. This year, candidates will take 120 questions within 150 minutes.
The structure of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment test consists of three parts: language use; mathematics, logical thinking, data analysis; and problem solving, to assess candidates' basic abilities to study at university.
"The structure of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam from 2025 will still include 3 parts: language use; mathematics, logical thinking and data analysis; and problem solving. The adjustment compared to the current exam focuses mainly on the problem solving part. Candidates will be able to choose to do 3 out of 6 groups of problems during the test," said Mr. Quan.
Regarding the use of competency assessment test results for admission to member schools, Ho Chi Minh City National University stipulates that only the results of the entrance exam year will be used. Currently, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education organizes a specialized competency assessment test that allows candidates to reuse the results of the previous year's exam for admission.

Meanwhile, another parent wondered how long it would take for a medical student to graduate and get a paid job.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khoi - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy - said that at university level, depending on the major, the study time is different. In which, the majors of medicine, traditional medicine, and preventive medicine that are awarded a doctor's degree have a longer study time of 6 years. The major of pharmacy has a study time of 5 years, while bachelor's majors (testing, nursing, midwifery, etc.) have a study time of 4 years.
According to regulations, some health sciences fields require additional training in professional practice to obtain a practicing certificate. According to current regulations, newly graduated doctors must complete an additional 18 months of practice.
Starting January 1, 2027, doctors are required to take an additional competency exam. If they fail this exam, they will not be able to practice medicine even if they have a medical degree.
"Thus, the study time for medical students must be longer. This also helps students consider and choose quality training schools. In the future, there will be a situation where even if they have a medical degree and enough practice, but cannot pass the national competency assessment exam to issue a certificate of practice, they will not be able to work. Students who want to study health sciences have a relatively long investment process compared to other majors," Mr. Khoi noted.
Which major has the most job opportunities in the next 5 years?

Answering the question of a parent interested in the economic sector about which sector is forecast to have the greatest job opportunities in the next 5 years , Prof. Dr. Nguyen Khac Quoc Bao - Vice Director of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics - said that most students and parents want to choose a sector that suits the needs of society to have wide-open job opportunities.
However, in the context of the current national and world economy, it is difficult to make an accurate forecast for the next few years which industry will have the most job opportunities. Especially, in the current technology boom, the behavior of consumers and management agencies has changed a lot.
The current training trend is multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary. Therefore, any profession that has knowledge and skills from many different fields will create security for future university degree holders.
Nowadays, the trend is to combine the application of science and technology, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence to solve traditional economic problems. Do not consider university as a vocational training. At university, what students benefit from is self-study and self-research to change and upgrade themselves so that their university degrees are not outdated, no matter how the economy develops.
"Thus, choosing a career that is suitable for the development trend of society is important, but equally important is how to study and which school to study. We need to choose a major that is suitable for our own qualities. If we choose to study a trendy major, but we are not suitable for it, we cannot exploit our full potential to create development.
You should choose careers that resonate, combine to anticipate the trend of technology explosion, innovation and creativity," Mr. Bao advised.

How can I decide my major?
At the consultation session, many parents also expressed concerns and worries in choosing a major and school for their children. Many parents said that they had many conflicts with their children when they made their own decisions about choosing a major .
According to Dr. Pham Tan Ha - Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), parents should listen to their children to guide them in choosing a career.
Parents should not impose career guidance on their children. Some parents love their children and want them to study and have a good job with a high income in the future, while their children want to choose another major, with few job opportunities and little money, so the parents do not accept it. This is very inappropriate.
"In reality, only when students are interested can they learn and succeed. Even if their parents force them, they still cannot learn. We have seen many students who enter university and have to stop after a period of study because it is not what they thought and not what they are passionate about.
Parents should not worry too much about deciding on their children's career. If they are passionate and study well, they will have a good job. Being good not only in knowledge but also in skills will certainly give them the opportunity to advance and have a good income. If their children have already decided on their career, parents should accompany them," said Mr. Ha.

How long does it take to get an engineering degree?
A parent heard that currently students at the Polytechnic University who want to get an engineering degree must study for 4 years to get a bachelor's degree and then must continue studying to get an engineering degree. "I don't know if this regulation is correct and if there are any changes now?", this parent asked.
Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hoai Thang - Head of Training Department, University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - answered: According to the Law on Higher Education 2019, when a student graduates from university, he/she will be awarded a bachelor's degree. Some specialized majors award degrees as engineers, architects, doctors, pharmacists, etc.
"Currently, our school offers a 4-year bachelor's degree in some majors. But I affirm that all engineering majors of the Polytechnic University train engineers.
Currently, there are technology engineers and technical engineers. The school aims to train engineers who are capable of creating new products and new projects, and in fact, Polytechnic students have been and are doing that.
The four-year training program grants a bachelor's degree in engineering to become a technical engineer. We are ready to build a training program to grant an engineering degree, but currently no student has been granted an engineering degree under the 2019 Law on Higher Education," said Mr. Thang.

Many schools train accounting and finance, how to choose?
A student expressed his interest in accounting and finance, but there are many schools that offer training in this field. So what are the differences between the schools that offer training in this field and what criteria should be used to choose the right one ?
MSc. Nguyen Thai Chau - Director of the Center for Admissions and Business Relations of the University of Finance - Marketing, said that currently there are many universities (public and private) training in finance and accounting. Regarding the training program, these majors all follow the general curriculum framework of the Ministry of Education and Training, besides, depending on the strengths of each school, students can equip themselves with some specific knowledge and skills.
"At our school, which is under the Ministry of Finance, the training program is designed to include knowledge of public finance, tax, customs, import and export, etc. to train students who can work for public enterprises and departments in the financial sector. The accounting major has corporate accounting and auditing.
Currently, universities have close relationships with large enterprises, creating the best conditions for students to access practical knowledge in enterprises early. All schools have internship programs for potential candidates of large corporations, and job fairs to help students from the second and third years learn how to apply the knowledge they have learned to their work so that they can confidently enter the labor market later," Mr. Chau added.
