The Ho Chi Minh City North-South axis road project has invested nearly 10,000 billion VND to build a 7.2 km long elevated road and parallel road. Once completed, it will solve the traffic congestion problem in the southern area of Ho Chi Minh City.
The project to upgrade and expand Nguyen Huu Tho Street (North-South axis of Ho Chi Minh City) has a route length of 8.6 km, starting at the Nguyen Huu Tho - Nguyen Van Linh intersection and ending at the intersection with Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway.
This is one of the important traffic axes currently being exploited in Ho Chi Minh City, invested in and expanded under the BOT (build - operate - transfer) form after Resolution 98 on special mechanisms for the city was applied.
According to Dan Viet reporters, Nguyen Huu Tho Street currently has four lanes in both directions, and traffic jams often occur during rush hour.
As this is a route with a large number of trucks and containers constantly coming and going, while the road cross-section is narrow, the waiting time for traffic lights is quite long... so traffic congestion and jams occur constantly, especially at the intersection of Nguyen Huu Tho - Nguyen Van Linh.
Mr. Tran Khanh (residing in Thu Duc City) said: "Every time I go on this road during rush hour, I have to move little by little to move. Everyone hopes that this road will soon be expanded to make traffic easier."
The project to upgrade and expand the North-South axis of Ho Chi Minh City has a cross-section of 60 m wide, 10 lanes and corridors for green trees and technical infrastructure. The main route is a 7.2 km long overpass with 4 lanes, speed of 80 km/h.
The parallel road has 6 lanes with a speed limit of 60km/h and 14 bridges on both sides of the road. In the photo, the existing Nguyen Huu Tho road has a very large area in the middle, which is currently a swamp, where reeds grow... This is the area that will be used as an elevated road for the project.
In addition, the project will build different level intersections including the intersection of Nguyen Van Linh Street and Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway, giving priority to the main transport flow from Nguyen Huu Tho Street to Nguyen Van Linh Street and Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway running continuously.
The total preliminary investment of the project is about 9,894 billion VND. It is expected that in the first quarter of 2025, the investment policy will be approved; in the second and third quarters of 2025, the feasibility study report will be prepared, appraised and approved; in the fourth quarter of 2025, procedures for selecting investors and signing project contracts will be carried out. In the fourth quarter of 2025 - third quarter of 2026, site clearance will be carried out. As for construction, the component project using state budget capital will start in the fourth quarter of 2025. The PPP (public-private partnership) component project will start in the first quarter of 2026. The project is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2028.
The project is expected to become a fast, less interrupted traffic axis connecting the existing central area with the new urban area of South Saigon, the urban area - Hiep Phuoc port, forming a radial traffic axis connecting Ring Road 2 with Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway (Ring Road 3) and later Ring Road 4; meeting the inter-regional traffic needs of the southern gateway area of the city with the provinces of the East and Southwest.
