5 types of medicine need to drink a lot of water

Báo Gia đình và Xã hộiBáo Gia đình và Xã hội28/02/2025

When taking pills, we need to take the medicine with water to speed up the dissolution process of the medicine in the stomach, improve the effectiveness of the medicine and speed up the elimination of the medicine from the body. Some medicines need more water than usual...

1. The effect of water when taking medicine

When you take a pill, water helps the pill travel from your mouth to your stomach and into your small intestine for absorption to produce the desired effect. Swallowing pills without enough water can cause the pill to get stuck in your esophagus, causing irritation, preventing the pill from working properly, and in some cases, can even lead to unwanted side effects.

The amount of water needed may also depend on the form of the medication. For example, you may need to swallow more water with a large pill or capsule than with a small pill or liquid.

2. Medications that require drinking more water

Antipyretics: Antipyretics and analgesics such as paracetamol and ibuprofen mainly reduce fever and relieve pain. The process of reducing fever will be accompanied by profuse sweating. To avoid exhaustion due to excessive sweating and dehydration, you should drink more water when taking this medicine.

Drugs that irritate the digestive tract: Oral bisphosphonates, such as alendronate sodium, irritate the esophagus and must be taken with plenty of water. Also, the patient should not lie down within 30 minutes of taking the drug. In addition, some drugs that irritate the digestive tract such as potassium chloride, vitamin C, aspirin, prednisone... should also increase the amount of water consumed to reduce the irritation of the drug to the digestive tract.

Uric acid lowering drugs: When using uric acid lowering drugs such as allopurinol, febuxostat, it is best to drink more than 2,000 ml of water per day to avoid uric acid concentration in the urinary system increasing too high and forming stones.

Diuretics: Common diuretics (such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, spironolactone) have a diuretic effect and can easily cause dry mouth, frequent urination or palpitations, requiring patients to drink plenty of water to replace lost body fluids.

There are some medications that require more water than others after taking them.

Diabetes medications: Metformin and SGLT2 inhibitors, which can lead to dehydration. A side effect of metformin is stomach upset and diarrhea. SGLT2 inhibitors prevent the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose from the blood they are filtering, causing the sugar to be excreted in the urine, which can lead to frequent urination.

To use your medication safely, always read the label and any accompanying information carefully. Find out how much water you should drink with your medication. The right amount of water will depend on the medication you are taking and your specific medical condition. If you are not sure how much water you should drink, ask your pharmacist or doctor.
