On August 6, Colonel Nguyen Tien Mao, Deputy Commander of Hai Phong Border Guard, said that on August 5, the unit received information that fishing boat QN - 3457 lost contact in the waters of Cat Hai District. Three people on board, including: boat owner Nguyen Van Xa (53 years old), Mrs. Nguyen Thi Gai (52 years old, Mr. Xa's wife) and son Nguyen Tuan Anh (18 years old), all residing in Tan An Commune, Quang Yen Town (Quang Ninh), were confirmed missing.
Immediately after receiving the news, Hai Phong Border Guard mobilized 1 ship, 3 speedboats and dozens of officers and soldiers ready to approach the distressed ship when weather conditions were favorable.
On the evening of August 5, relatives of the victim Xa's family hired a salvage ship and 3 divers to coordinate with Hai Phong authorities to determine the location of the sunken fishing boat and search for the missing victims.
Divers and relatives of victim Nguyen Van Xa approached the location of the fishing boat that had an accident near the underground sea dike at Lach Huyen, but upon inspection, there was no one on board and the boat was severely damaged.
At 6:10 a.m. on August 6, authorities approached the sunken fishing boat close to the seawall. However, there was no one on board. The ship's cabin was broken by the waves; the side of the ship adjacent to the seawall was shattered.
According to Thanh Nien reporters this morning, relatives and neighbors of fisherman Nguyen Van Xa's family are still on duty at Cat Hai Town (Cat Hai District) to coordinate with Hai Phong City authorities to continue searching for the 3 victims; at the same time, waiting for low tide to conduct salvage work.
As a neighbor of the victim Xa's family, Mr. Le Hai, who joined the search team, said that on August 3, Mr. Xa's wife and children took their boat out to sea to fish but did not return all day. As if having a premonition, everyone called Mr. Xa but there was no signal. Meanwhile, when night fell, the sea area of Ha Long - Cat Hai had thunderstorms and rough seas.
The next day, everyone waited for news but did not see him so they organized a search.
According to Mr. Hai, based on the scene as well as the traces of severe damage at the bow of the ship, it can be confirmed that Mr. Xa's fishing boat hit the nearly 2 km long underground sea dike at Lach Huyen. After the accident, due to the dark night, heavy rain and strong wind, everyone was unable to escape in time and was swept away by the seawater and went missing.
It is known that Mr. Xa's family has 3 children (2 boys, 1 girl). The eldest son drowned while going to sea with his parents and died ten years ago; the daughter is over 20 years old and has a family; the youngest son is Tuan Anh. Tuan Anh has just passed the national high school graduation exam in 2023 and is waiting for the results. During this time, Tuan Anh followed his parents to the sea to help with fishing when the heartbreaking incident happened.
Currently, the shipwreck area has level 5 winds and waves, and authorities have not been able to salvage the vehicle.
