A total of 11 people are missing after heavy rains lashed parts of southern China's Guangdong Province in recent days. Search and rescue operations are still underway, the Guangdong provincial emergency management department said.
Recent heavy rains have affected many areas of Guangdong Province, including Shaoguan, Guangzhou, Heyuan, Zhaoqing, Qingyuan, Meizhou, and Huizhou. A total of 53,741 people have been relocated across the province, of whom 12,256 have been relocated in emergency situations.
According to the Guangdong Provincial Water Resources Department, 38 hydrological stations on 24 rivers in the province recorded water levels exceeding the warning threshold as of 4 p.m. on April 21. The downstream of the Bac Giang River is expected to suffer major flooding due to continuous and heavy rain.
The provincial disaster reduction committee has activated a level 4 emergency response to deal with flooding in Shaoguan and Qingyuan cities. Rescue efforts are also underway. More than 200 sanitation workers have been deployed to promptly clear mud and fallen trees from streets, and dredge waterways and sewers.
Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Observatory predicts that the province will have frequent rains next week.
